Both the men’s and women’s track

In the game against Spartanburg
Methodist College last Wednesday night,
the Lady Tornados suffered a disappoin
ting loss, even though they played a tough
game. The final score was a hard to
swallow 51-79.
The-half-time score was a close 28-35,
with Carmen Nelon leading the way with 7
points. Ruth Earle and Beth Harrell were
also playing a good game, when in the first
half Earle got struck above the eye and
was taken to the hospital to have stitches
put in. There were a couple of great tur
novers for the Lady Tornados, but they
just didn’t seem to be able to make them
work in their favor. Susan Seymour was
hitting well from the corners of the court
and was top scorer of the game with 16
points overall and Shelley Ivey followed
close behind with 12.
Coach Jane Long commented before the
game about what a victory would mean to
the team. “It is a conference game and is
important to our confidence.” Even
The one bright spot for the Lady Tor
nados throughout the disappointing game
was the fact that teammate Antoinette
Smith, who was injured in a car accident
last November, was there to cheer the
team on.
though the last few games have been
disappointing. Long says a lot of that has
to do with the fact that more than a few of
her players have been stricken with
■various illnesses. Hopefully the women
won’t let this get them down with the
conference tournament coming up.
Men’s Basketball
Impressing BC
by Bonnie Davis
Domination was the name of the game
for the Brevard College Tornados mens’
basketball team as they rolled over the
Spartanburg Methodist players last
Wednesday night, February 19th. The op
ponents barely even worked up a sweat as
the Tornados whirled them away with a
final score of 84—49.
BC got a quick jump on the game, scor
ing 10 points in the first five minutes while
SMC scored only two. There almost seem
ed to be no hope then, for the Tornados
kept that lead throughout the entire game,
even doubling it. In half-time statistics,
Ricky Chatman was the leading scorer,
while Anthony Hailey came up with the
most rebounds. With some great team
work these two players lead the Tornados
into a half-time score of 37-18.
With a fired-up crowd of fans to urge
them on, the men came out in the second
half even more revved up. SMC managed
to play better ball and score some points,
but BC had such a wide lead that BC had
should be with 3 of his girls being national
qualifiers. They are Kim Nelson in the
mile run, Cathy Haynie in the 800 m. and
Heather Chamberlain, also in the 800 m.
Perhaps even Coach Norman Witek and
his cross country champions will also br
ing home an indoor track championship
too.
Wednesday, February 26, 1986
nothing to worry about, Hailey, Chatman,
and Rodney Deyton all played great
games, hitting most of what they shot, and
with fellow teammates aiding in key offen
sive and defensive plays, the Tornados
were unstoppable.
Brevard dominated throughout, keeping
the action fast-paced. The crowd was in a
rowdy mood, giving a lot of good natured
heckling to a few marked opponents.
Some of the fans even showed some
hysterically funny school spirit as four
young men made themselves impromptu
cheerleaders by executing pyramid stunts
and cartwheels during time-outs.
Sophomore Rick Chanmberlin com
mented on the action of the game. “It was
exciting, even though we beat the you
know what out of them.” And the final
score only goes to prove this true as the BC
Tornados ended the game with an over
whelming score of 84-49.
