Men’s Tennis Team-
Pulling Together
by Bonnie Davis
Though the members of the Brevard Col
lege men’s tennis team have been playing
well on individual levels, things have not
been faring so well for them as a team.
However, scores don’t always reveal the
kind of playing that really goes on.
Dr. William Alexander, the team coach,
reiterates this point by stating, “There
have been some close match scores that
could have gone either way.” The team
has also been hindered by the loss of top
players to grades, and the fact that BC is
playing some very tough four-year schools
and state-ranked teams.
Playing at the top six seed positions in
order from 1 to 6 are the following: Dee
Molten, Doug Crow, Jim Knapp, Tracey
Clark, Greg McIntosh, and Eric Janulet.
Playing at the alternate 7th position is
Scott Stonefield.
The men have 3 of their remaining mat
ches to be played here at Brevard. Tomor
row they will be up against Catawba
Valley Tech and play will begin at 2 p.m.
Next Monday, 14th, their opponent will be
North Greenville College, and the remain
ing home match will be against Young
Harris College. All students, tennis fans,
and faculty members are urged to come
out and support the men’s tennis team.

The Brevard College men’s track team
recently competed in the National Junior
College Indoor Track Championships in
Fayettville, Arkansas. They finished in 8th
place with a total of 14 points, and three of
the runners came home with other honors.
Running in the three-mile and coming in
4th place was John Christiansen with a
time of 14:11.05. Christiansen also ran the
one-mile in 4:14.06, putting him in 5th
place for that event. For both events,
Christiansen received All-American
honors. Henning Brandt also received All-
American honors, when he placed 3rd in
the two-mile wiht a time of 9:12.30.
Tyrone Adams not only made All-
American, but also set a school record
when he competed in the High Jump and
came in 4th place with a jump of 6’10”,
Other competitors were David Mays in the
three-mile and Dean Duncan who ran the
ipop yards.
The team also began its outdoor track
season as they competed in the Atlantic
Coast Relays held in Raleigh, N.C., the
week-end before last. Two BC runners
qualified for NJCAA Championships to be
held in Adessa, Texas.
Competing in the 5000 meters was John
Christiansen who came in 5th with a time
14:15.96, which qualified him fo the NJCAA
championships. Winston Brown had a time
of 15:11.1, putting him in 15th place. David
Coulter ran at 15:35.7 placing inn at 23.
Teammate Paul Carpenter placed right
behind him at 24 with a time of 15:35.8.
NJCAA qualifier David Mays ran the
10,000 meters in 30:57.9 finishing him in
ninth place. San Tuman-Singh ran the 100
meters in 11.45. Adamas turned out a 6’6”
for the high jump. Competing in the 1500
meters were Brian Westrater at 4:00.86
and Dean Duncan at 4:00.91. Running as
4-man team in the two-mile relay were
Christiansen, Duncan, Westrater, and
Tom Johnson. Their over-all score was a
7:52.9.
Coach Norm Witek had this to say about
the season, “The entire indoor season, in
cluding the nationals, were hampered by
continuous bouts of the flu.” There were
also some injuries experienced and an in
jury to his achilles forced Brandt to
withdraw from the mile. However, Brandt
broke the school record in the 3000 meters
with his time of 8:21.4.
Lady Tornados
Track Team Sets Records
by Bonnie Davis
Three of Brevard’s Lady Tornado run
ners competed in the Indoor Track Na
tional Championships held last month in
Fayetville, Arkansas. They were Kim
Nelson, Terrie Jackson, and Ellen Forbes.
Earning All-American Honors in the
2-mile run and bringing in a school record
of 11:09.0 while finishing in 3rd place was
Kim Nelson. She also ran in the mile. Also
competing in the mile and 2-mile runs was

2-mile. Forbes represented BC in the high

Several school records have been made
thus far by some of the Lady Tornados.
Nelson set 3 records of her own. She ran a
3:12 in the 1000 meters, a 10:25.6 in the 3000
meters, and the new record in the 2-mile
race. Jackson set a new record in the mUe
run with a time of 5:16.2. Running the 800
meters in 2:24.6 gave Cathie Haynie a new
record.
Individual records weren’t the only ones
made as the women pulled together as
teams to make some new records. Com
peting in the 4 x 800 relay were Nelson,
Lizanne Lance, Haynie, and Heather
Chamberlain. Their record score was
9:50.3. Running in the Distance Medley

Karen Mulligan, Jackson, and Nelson.

Davidson, N.C. They will be competing
this Friday and Saturday in the Dogwood
Relays in Knoxville, Tennessee.

After following a rigorous pre-season
conditioning program, the BC Lady Tor
nado tennis players have begun their
season and as of press time stand with a
record of 1 and 3.
The ladies suffered a couple of disap
pointing losses to Anderson College, and
though the scores don’t show it, they
played some tough individual matches,
often running them out to 3 sets. Coach
Jane Long had this to say about her team ;
“I expect us to play better, though we
haven’t had much time to work together as
a team because of bad weather, vacations,
illneses amd injuries.” Lynn Simiril, who
was playing the number three seed,
recently suffered a severe knee injury
which puts her out of any sport for a while.
The top six seeds are still being
flucuated back and forth, but it looks as
though the line-up will be as follows; Bon
nie Davis, seeded number one, followed by
Amy Lister, Shelly Ainsworth, Allison
Wright, Adrienne Elliot, and Stephanie
Corn. The doubles teams are Lister and
Ainsworth playing number one. Davis and
Wright at number two, and Corn and Elliot
making up the third team.
Last week the ladies played two away
matches, losing at Anderson 6-2 and winn
ing 6-0(love, as they say in tennis) at
Tusculum College in Tennessee. Double
matches were canceled due to rain at that
match.
Matches were scheduled to be played
last Saturday and Monday, both against
Lees-McRae. The Lady Tornados are
playing this afternoon against Tusculum
on their home courts at 3:00 p.m. All ten
nis fans are invited to come out and watch.
