“ROUGH, BUT FUN” said Steve Cain
when describing the intramural football
championships. The championships were
held on Nov. 20, after two days of play-offs.
The Green Gunkies were up against the
Taylor Watergates, and the playing condi
tions were muddy and wet. Even though
conditions weren’t ideal, Captain Hal Gor
don of the Green Gunkies, led his team to
victory. The final score was 19-0.
Freshman Chip “Hit Man” York said
that intramurals were interesting and fun.
“The last game got to be too serious,” add
ed freshman player Warren Nance. Both
players commented on their tough opposi
tion, the Taylor Watergates.
Players for Green included: Chip Robin
son, Chip “Hit Man” York, Warren Nance,
Darrand “Peanut” Richards, Brian
Sewell, Jim Poovey, Kyle Glasgow,
Graham Faris, Joe Watson, Sean Juman-
Singh, Robert Cooler, Ricky Surles, and
Steve Cain.

The intramural games began on Mon
day, Nov. 17, and after the first week of
competition, the Beam team occupied first
place, followed by the Goon Platoon in se
cond, the Faculty team in third and the
Green Jones team in 4th.
But after holding onto the number one
spot, the beam team lost its grip on victory
as the Goon Platoon team beat them out in
the championship finals held last Wednes
day. The two teams played the best two
out of three games and the score of the
final game was 16-14.

Brevard College
cheerleaders are
cosmopolitan
By Melissa Miles
This year there will be something new at
the Brevard College basketball games —
one sophomore and seven freshmen who
make up the 1986-87 cheerleading squad.
After learning chants and cheers for two
weeks, the work culminated Sept. 30 as 12
girls performed a group chant, an in
dividual chant and cheer, and anything ex
tra such as a cartwheel or a split.
That same night the points were totaled
and the results showed a cosmopolitan
team whose members are; Cindy Edmon
son, Sarasota, Fla.; Nikki Johnson,
Roanoke Rapids; Rachel Makupson,
Thomasville; Ann McDaniel,
Mechanicsville, Va.; Melissa Miles, Fort
Lauderdale, Fla.; Gina Pardue, Elkin;
Yoshiko Sato, Chiba, Japan; and Sharon
Sentz, Miami, Fla.
Since tryouts the squad has been practic
ing four days a week, as well as selling ads
to local merchants to raise funds for new
uniforms. The ads were placed on a poster
along with a picture of the cheerleaders
and the men’s basketball team. The poster
will be given to the fans at half-time.
Although the squad’s experience ranges
from none at all to nine vears. freshman
Rachel Makupson feels that the team has a
lot of potential.
“There’s a lot of talent on the team, and
with drive and dedication we can go far.”
Aside from cheering for the men’s and
women’s basketball teams, the
cheerleaders have been making banners to
be hung in the gym before each game and
are planning to sing the national anthem
before one of the games.
Since there were no cheerleaders during
the basketball season last year, the squad
is not exactly sure what everyone is going
to expect. Sophomore Nikki Johnson sum
marized their feelings, “We’re all really
excited about the start of the season and
we’ve got a lot of hard work ahead of us,
trying to pull it all together, but I think
we’ll do a great job.”
And the fans go wild at a recent ballgame
