Kick-Off Tournament opens BC mens’s soccer season
by Dorsey Waldron
Coach Don Scarborough feels right now
his team is in “a period of learning,” he
says, “they are working hard,, and if they
can be taught, they can and will make it to
nationals.” Scarborough is pleased with
the attitudes and progress that his “young
team” has made so far.
Line boys have been practicing since
August 23. Their season opened up with the
Kickoff Tournament against Miami-Dade
in September in which Brevard lost 1-0.
Following the game was the September 5
game against Camden University College;
in which Brevard has 2-1 comeback vic
tory. Andersoi) College concluded the tour
nament with a score of 4-0, our loss. On
September 10, Brevard lost to North
Greenville College 3-2.
There are several freshman players on
the team. The sophomores have been
“very supportive and they are very good
leaders; there is a lot of unity and the team
works together well,” said freshman Matt
Blue from High Point, N.C. Jimmy Red
mond, another freshman player, seems to
feel the “attitude of the team is great and
there is no segregation among the
sophomore and freshman players.” He
also feels that Don has been a good in
fluence,” and that “he is real serious about
the game, but he insists on a class act on
and off the field.”

“Intense” is how the team can best be
described by Redmond.
The soccer manager, Robert Rice, said,
’“Even though it is a younger team this
year, I think the players are starting to
gain positive attitudes, and they want to go
to the nationals.”
The September line-up is as follows:
Sept. 23 Lees-McRae at Brevard College 4
p.m.
Sept. 26 Anderson at Brevard College 3
p.m.
Sept. 28 Spartanburg-Methodist 4 p.m.

BC runners show their stuff at first meet
by Carlisle Turner
Brevard College’s men’s cross country
team swept the top three spots in a season
opening victory at the Berry Invitational
in Rome, Georgia on September 12.
Brevard sophomore John Erickson
coasted to a first place finish with a time of
25:15 over the rolling five-mile course.
Teammates Jeff Pajak and Brad Dodson
secured second and third places respec
tively, nearly half a minute behind
Erickson. The squad showed complete
m
dominance in the 14 team meet by placing
five other runners in the top 10 as they
easily outdistanced second place Berea
College by 60 points. Points are determin
ed by taking the ranking of each team’s
best five runners and adding them
together. The lower the score the better,
with 15 being a perfect score.
“A lot of good things happened in the
race,” commented second year coach
Dave Rinker. “The group carried out our
race plan. They ran hard and there was a
lot of cooperation. We’ve still got a lot of
miles to run, but we’re on the right track,”
Rinker added. Other top 10 finishers for
Brevard included Glenn MacDonald, Jeff
Breen, Scott Dvorak, Geoff Moore, and
Ted Fort.
This year’s team, however, can not rest
on its laurels. With loads of quality
freshman recruits meshing with returning
sophomores, this year’s squad is out to
regain the NJCAA men’s championship
which Brevard nearly owns. Out of the
past seven years Brevard has won four na
tional championships and finished second
the other three years, including a loss last
year to Ricks Junior College.
Coach Rinker says, however, that there
is no outside pressure to win on this squad.
The only pressure is the teams own inner
drive and determination to regain the title.
“They come to practice and get the job
done,” added Rinker. And get the job done
they have. The 24 runners have been put
ting in a grueling 70 to 100 miles a week
and have spent the past three weeks runn
ing on rugged mountain trails.

The Brevard College Lady Torandoes
opened their soccer season with a 3-0 vic
tory over UNC-Asheville, Wednesday,
Sept. 9.
Paige Jackson opened the scoring for BC
with an unassisted goal with 23:41 left in
the first half. Karen Ellis added to the
scoring as she score on an assist for
Melanie Thompson with 20:24 left in the
first half. BC failed to convert on a penalty
kick as the half came to a close with BC
ahead 2-0.
Lightning struck for the third time when
with only seven minutes remaining in the
game, BC put the game on ice when
Michelle Marton cracked a shot from the
right wing to give BC a decisive victory
over UNC-A 3-0. BC’s next home game was
Sept. 15 at Brevard against Warren
Wilson.
After a medicore start and a scoreless
first half, the Lady Tornadoes knocked in
three early second half goals to defeat
Warren-Wilson, 3-0.
Warren-Wilson became the third
straight victim of the Lady Tornadoes.
Paige Jackson started the flurry of scoring
with an assist from Michelle Morton with
1:36 gone in the second half. BC struck
again when Rebecca Grassie connected
with only 10:23 gone in the second half to
give BC a 2-0 lead.
Then only minutes later Melanie Thomp
son scored off an assist from Michelle Mor
ton with 11:26 gone in the second half.
That's all BC needed to record their third
victory in as many games.
