Coach Rogers on Pistol Pete: “He was the greatest”
by Jeff Turner
The name “Pistol Pete” Maravich will
be long remembered as one of the greatest
basketball players ever to play the game.
“I consider Pete a great player, and you
can count the great players on one hand,”
said Brevard College Basketball Coach
Doug Rogers.
Last summer Maravich was at BC con
ducting a basketball camp for young boys.
“He was here, he stayed in the dorm with
the kids. He would demonstrate
everything,” said Rogers.
He planned to conduct the camp again
this summer, but he died suddenly, earlier
this month at the age of 40.
A product of Raleigh Broughton High
School in Raleigh, N.C., he played his col
lege basketball under his father. Press
Maravich, at LSU.
In his three seasons at LSU, he broke the
following NCAA records: most points,
highest scoring average (44.2 ppg), and
most games scoring at least 50 ( 28).
After three great seasons with LSU, he
went on and played 10 season in the NBA
with the Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans
Jazz, Utah Jazz, and Boston Celtics. He led
the NBA in scoring three years and was an
All-Star five vears
But with all of these records the most im
portant thing in Maravich’s life was that
he was a Christian. And even at the basket
ball camp he showed it. “He gave of
himself to the kids. He gave them basket
ball skills, proper eating habits and
religious guidance,” said Rogers.
At the camp, he not only helped the kids,
but he also helped Coach Rogers. “He gave
so much. He renewed my basketball ex
pertise. We use some of the drills he taught
every day in practice,” said Rogers.
Many of the kids at the camp did not
know who Pete Maravich was when they
came to the camp. But as Coach Rogers
put it, “He was an outstanding player. He
was the Larry Bird and Magic Johnson of
And as Kentucky Basketball Coach Ed
die Sutton said on his television show,
“Pete was the greatest ballhandler of all
time.”
Pete Maravich accomplished many
things on the court. The last was being the
youngest player ever selected to the
Basketball Hall of Fame. But he felt that
his most important accomplishment in life
was when he became a Christian.

get lumpy. If you stir them too much, they
get really cold.
