The Brevard College men’s basketball
team improved their record to 8-2 with a
81-68 victory over Blanton’s Tuesday, Jan.

game-high 25 points. He was followed by

Webb had nine rebounds for BC also.
Sophomore point guard Tadd Conner dish

The Tornadoes led all the way with the
lead ranging from 10-15 points in the first
half. BC then took control with a 40-29
halftime lead. Then, behind Cole and
Bean, BC broke the lead open before cruis
ing to an 81-68 victory. Blanton’s could
never get closer than seven points in the
second half.
Coach Doug Rogers said, “I’m pleased,
but we still need to work on a lot of things.”
Alford Stubbs led Blanton’s with 20
points.
On Saturday night, Jan. 16, Brevard
traveled to take on highly touted Anderson
College. Anderson edged BC with a 68-67
win.
For 39:58 it seemed as if Brevard would
win the game. Freshman Darren Lawler
came out with his guns loaded, scoring a
game-high 24 points, (16 in the first half).
Lawler shook off a one for eight three-point
shooting night against Blanton’s by hitting
six of eight three-pointers against Ander
son.
BC came out firing with Lawler scoring
the first 10 points. BC took a 33-30 halftime
lead on Tadd Connors’ 25-foot shot at the
buzzer.
Rounding out the scoring was Mike Cole,
13 points; Tadd Conners, nine; Doug
Webb, eight; Tom DeLucia and Kevin
Jackson with four each; Jason Williams,
three; and Ron Conner with two.
Mike Cole’s three-point play with 1:07
left gave BC a five-point lead. But Ander
son wasn’t finished. Carl Singleton of
Anderson tipped in a missed shot at the
buzzer to give Anderson the win.
This play wasn’t clean, Singleton
jumped on Mike Cole’s back and took the
ball out of Cole’s hands and put in it.
The BC bench complained, but the play
still stood.
BC will now play Lees-McRae on Tues
day and Montreal on Wednesday.

The Lady Tornadoes started off their
new year in mid-January with a tough
schedule.
On January 14, the Lady Tornadoes
travelled to Warren Wilson where they
captured their first victory of the 1988
season. The Tornadoes, who won 71-€1, had
complete control of the game from the
opening tip-off. Shelly Ivey was the high
scorer with 22 points. Satina Waites and
Stephanie Hoback contributed a combined
total of 24 points, while Tonja Barksdale
added eight points and 13 rebounds.
Coach Jane Long was especially pleased
with the Ladies for out-rebounding the op
ponent 62-28.
On Jan. 16, the Tornadoes went to Ander
son for a doubleheader with them. The
Anderson Lady Trojans topped BC 85-48.
The Tornadoes played intensely the first
half and were only down by nine points at
halftime. However, in the second half, the
Trojans came out on fire, and made up for
the sluggish performance they showed in
the first half.
On Sunday, Jan. 17, BC’s Lady Tornado
hosted Lees College from Kentucky. The
Lady Generals, ranked third in the nation,
defeated the Tornadoes 92-50. This was the
toughest match-up of this season for the
women, and the Tornadoes played hard
the whole game.
Alison Stocks, who played an outstan
ding game, pumped in 20 points, and dealt
out six assists.
Coach Long said “Since we were going
up against the No. 3 team in the nation, 1
knew Lees would have a great advantage.
But I am proud of the girls for their great
effort, and playing the best they could.”
In the first week of February, the Tor
nadoes go up against three tough op
ponents. Feb. 3 takes them to Lees-McRae,
and Feb. 5th, BC hosts Louisburg and
North Greenville.
Pertelote wins
by Julie Litter
Congratulations to the ’87 Pertelote staff
for winning first place in the American
Scholastic Press Assocaition’s yearbook
contest.
For the past three years the Pertelote
has come in first place in the category'of
junior schools with less than 1,000
students.
Joyce Jackson, last year’s faculty ad
visor for yearbook, said the staff is put
under a lot of pressure in order to meet the
deadlines. Each monthly deadline, which
starts in October, requires 40 pages com
pleted.
Jackson said every time the staff
finishes a yearbook. They never feel that it
is perfect, and that that is what makes
them feel so much more special when the
Pertelote wins a top rating.
