Page 6 The Clarion February 17, 1988 Bob Glesenersays he owes it all to salamanders ® ^ wins top honors by Sal Cavarretta What do animal reproduction, clip boards and microscopes have in common? Dr. Robert Glesener. Glesener, a Chicago, Illinois native, is one of the many fine professors that Brevard College offers. Glesener, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree at the University of Maryland, and received his masters and Ph.D at the University of Michigan, has been at Brevard since 1979. Glesener says, “I wanted to be a psychologist even before thinking about biology, but I changed my mind when I was sent to Western Carolina on a work study program.” During this work study, Glesener spent three summers in Western Carolina. He was assigned to do research on various kinds of salamanders. Glesener says, “working with the salamanders told me that biology was what I wanted, so I went for it.” Whenever Glesener isn’t teaching, he en joys many hobbies. He likes to be with his wife of 18 years, Judy, and his daughters, Traci, 10 and Stefani, 14. Besides being with his family, Glesener has many other hobbies. Hiking, grading papers, working on his house, and eating pizza are just a few. Glesener is also in volved with the day students. He is their of ficial sponsor. Brevard College has been named one ol i the top schools in the Southeast in' photography and publications. j Brevard College’s Jock Lauterer has' been honored by CASE (the Council for Ad vancement and Support of Education) for two soccer photographs and the improve ment of the Alumni Magazine. | Lauterer, director of public information, said “Brevard was one of the few 2-year schools among the winners, so that makes winning all the more gratifying. We topped major 4-year universities such as Clem- son, Wake Forest, Miami, Alabama, Ten nessee, UNC-Greensboro and UVA.” Lauterer will receive the awards at the CASE district III Southeastern convention in Atlanta next month where his winning entries will be on display. Brevard College’s Alumni Magazine placed third in the Southeast in the; Periodical Improvement category Lauterer, editor-in-chief of the magazine,! undertook a complete graphic overhaul ofj the publication last year, along with in stituting a graphic identity program for all, the College publications. ^ “The Alumni Magazine is the flagship of the Brevard College publications,” Lauterer said, “and it must accurately reflect what BC is — a nurturing, people- oriented, caring, small liberal arts college. This is not a research institution, but rather a teaching college. We’re here only for the students — and the Alumni magazine, in words, design and pictures, now effectively articulates that position.” In the photography category, two of Lauterer’s soccer pictures won both the I ^ Grand Awards (1st place) in the sports and 1 news category. Also, one of the pictures, 1 depicting Coach Don Scarborough’s mud-_ covered men’s soccer team after a wiJi,B won Best of Category. ' ‘ Lauterer, who also teaches journalism at Brevard College and is the faculty ad visor for the campus newspaper, the Clarion, is the author of two books of Ap palachian profiles, “Wouldn’t Take Nothin’ for My Journey Now” (1980) The University of North Carolina Press; and “Runnin’ on Rims” (1986) Algonquin Books.
