Page 8 The Clarion February 17, 1988 Tornadoes head into last week of play before tourney by Chris Flaker The BC men took on North Greenville Saturday, Feb. 6 and once again BC drop ped a heart-breaker 70-69. North Greenville led all the first half, but BC cut the lead to four, 33-29. As they have in previous games this season, BC mounted a tremendous comeback. Led by Darren Lawler and a great team effort, BC took the lead with three minutes to go. Darren Lawler scored 16 points in the 2nd half to mount the comeback. Darren finished with 20 points, Mark Bean with 14 points,(9 rebounds) and Kevin Jackson 10, Tadd Conner 8 points (8 assists), Jamie Brown 7, Mike Cole 6, Tom DeLucia 2 and Jason Williams 2. Jimmy Thomas of North Greenville hit two free throws with : 06 seconds left to ice the game. Tadd Connor hit a 40-ft. shot at the buzzer to end the scoring. The BC men’s basketball team traveled to Lees McRae for the awaited rematch and fell up short again, 9&-87. Lees McRae led from the first shot until the last shot. Lees McRae built a 50-38 halftime lead. Their lead got to as high as 20 before BC came back. Darren Lawler scored a game high 22 points. Sophomore Tadd Connor had a career night by scoring 19 points and dishing out 15 assists. Mike Cole tallied 16 and 9 rebounds, Kevin Jackson 11, Mark Bean 6, Jason Williams 5, Tom DeLucia 4, Ronald Connor and Jamie Brown scored 2 each. BC rallied to cut the lead to 7 but couldn’t get any closer. The Brevard College men’s basketball team traveled to Montreat-Anderson and came up short 89-88 Monday, Feb. 1. BC staged a late run in the first half before taking a 52-48 halftime lead. Freshman guard Darren Lawler scored a season-high 30 points to lead the Tor nadoes. He was followed by Kevin Jackson 22 points (8 rebounds), Tadd Connor 9 (11 assists), Mike Cole 8, Mark Bean 8, Jason Williams 4, Jamie Brown 3, Tom DeLucia 3, and George Bryant l. BC led most of the second until the final :09 seconds. Montreal’s Chris Johnson hit a 8 ft. shot to lead the Montreal upset. The Brevard Classic was held Friday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30 with BC win ning both games. In the first game of the classic, Lenior Community College defeated King College JV 86-74. Then, in the night cap, BC defeated UNC-JV team 68-59 before a packed house in Boshamer Gymnasium. UNC led throughout most of the first half and led at the half 31-30. Kevin Jackson led the comeback in the second half by scoring 14 of his team high 21 Darren Lawler scored 15. Tom DeLucia 9, Mike Cole 9, Tadd Connor 5, Jason Williams 3, George Bryant 3, Ron Connor 2, Mark Bean had one pwint. Kevin Jackson and Mike Cole grabbed 8 re bounds each and Tadd Connor handed out 7 assists. On Saturday, BC defeated King College 75-59. Darren Lawler led BC with 18 points, Mark Bean 13 points (9 rebounds and 6 assists). Mike Cole 12 (9 rebounds), George Bryant 8. Tadd Connor 6, Kevin Jackson 6. Doug Webb 4. Tom DeLucia 3. Jamie Brown 2. Jason Williams 2, and Rick Burke 1. BC led all the way. The Men's basektball team defeated a small undermaned Central Piedmont team 97-71 Wednesday. January 27. Mike Cole led the assault by scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. BC couldn’t shake off a tough Central Pied mont team who hung close throughout the first half. BC then pulled away right before halftime and grabbed a 43-30 half time lead. BC then blew it open in the 2nd half. BC scoring included Darren Lawler 20, George Bryant 14, Jason Williams 9, Tadd Connor 8 and 10 assists, Mark Bean 6, Ron Connor and Kevin Jackson 4, Doug Webb 3, and Jamie Brown, Rick Bruke and Tom DeLucia 2. The BC men’s basketball team increas ed their record to 10-4 with an exciting 94-91 double overtime victory over Spartanburg-Methodist Saturday, Jan. 23, in Spartanburg. As in the Lees-McRae game, BC came out slow. Spartanburg jumped to an early lead. BC cut into the lead but trailed at the half 45-38. BC was led in scoring by sophomore for ward Mark Bean’s 21 points. Along with his 21 points, Bean pulled down a career-, high 19 rebounds. Mike Cole scored 19i points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Following; was Kevin Jackson with 18 points(8 re bounds), Darren Lawler 17, Tadd Conner 11 (and a season high 11 assists), and Jason Williams 8 points. BC had a chance to win it in regulation but Tadd Connor’s 30 ft. desperation shot rattled in and out. In the first OT neither team could take control, forcing the game into a second overtime. In the second over time, key free throw shooting was the dif ference. Tadd Connor and Darren Lawler hit clutch freethrows down the stretch. Mark Bean and Mike Cole grabbed several key offensive rebounds that sparked BC to its first victory in conference play this year. A fine all-around game was turned in by the Tornadoes. BC now stands 1-3 in conference play. The Brevard College men’s basketball team ran their record to 9-4, with a 89-71 thrashing of Montreat-Anderson, Wednes day, Jan. 20 at BC. Coming off that 70-69 heart-breaker to Lees-McRae, BC came out smoking. The team shot 63 percent in the first half and finished the game by shooting an outstan ding 66 percent. BC came out firing by tak ing a 42-28 lead. Balanced scoring would set the tone for this game. Mike Cole led the attack by scoring a team high 17 points. He was followed by Tadd Connor 15 points, Darren Lawler with 13, Kevin Jackson and Mark Bean with 11 each, Tom DeLucia 9, Rick Burke 4, George Bryant 3, Doug Webb, Jason Williams, and Jamie Brown rounded out the scoring with 2 each. Sophomore Mark Bean played one of his finest games of the season. Along with his 11 points he hauled down a game high 15 rebounds and 5 assists. Bean, who has been bothered by the flu, came off the bench to lead the second half rout. Montreat-Anderson couldn’t get closer than 7 points. The BC men’s basketball team dropped a tough game to Lees-McRae 71-70 on Tuesday, Jan. 19. Lees-McRae came out early and asserted themselves as the team to beat. Lees built up a 44-28 halftime lead. BC put on a furious comeback only to fall short. BC had a chance to win it in the end. Dar ren Lawler’s 3-point shot cut the lead to 1 with 11 seconds to go. BC then got the ball back on a missed free throw by a Lees- McRae player. Jason Williams had a chance to win the game, but his free throw attempt with one second left missed. Mike Cole somehow came up with the ball, but his layup missed also. Lees McRae escaped with a 71-70 victory. Intramurals provide sizzling hardcourt action at BC Brevard by Melanie Ramseur Swish! Only five seconds remain as the basketball flies through the air and rips through the hoop — just in time for another victory for an intramural basketball team. Every year, interested Brevard College students participate in Intramural Basket ball. The games are for fun, and it keeps the BC campus on its toes. BC basketball player Kevin Jackson, coach of the “Fellaz” said, “The Fellaz (4-0) are very competitive, they like to have fun on the court, but they care very much about winning and losing, as you can tell by the record.” “The Beer Belly Crew are 3-0 and their biggest rivals are the “Fellaz.” As of last week, the standings for men's intramural basketball were; “The Fellaz, ”4-0; “Beer Belly Crew,”3-0; “Just Plain Goobers,”2-1; “The Townies,”3-l; “Long Necks,”3-2; “OverLords,”2-2: “Taylor Watergates,”2-2; “Faculty,”l-3; “East Beam Third Floor,”0-4; “The Nor man Express,”0-4. The ladies at Brevard are also slammin’ and jammin’. Tammi Walden, coach of the Eastie Girls, says that,“The game allows the ladies to enjoy basketball on a very competitive level but they have fun. The ‘Eastie Girls’ are destined for a cham pionship title hopefully against the “Soc cer Dunkers’.” Last week’s women’s standmgs were “Soccer Dunkers”, 3-0; “Eastie Girls”, 2-1; “West Jones”, 1-1; “Pandas”, 0-4.
