The Clarion September 8, 1988 Page 5 BC goes to Austria By Andrea Henry Austria’s lush landscape and sky-high mountain peaks annually welcome multitudes of vacationers. This year, Austria extends its welcome to seven Brevard College students venturing on a semester-long study program. The study abroad program received en couragement from BC President Dr. Billy Greer, who arranged for a faculty member to take BC students to Europe and expose them to Austria’s customs and culture. Greer’s encouragement was all it took to spring faculty member Maggi Zednick into action. Zednick previously knew prime locations suitable for learning and for leisure. Thus Zednick became coordinator in finding an apartment on the lake in Vienna, Austria, where the student group will be living along with Ms. Zednick and BC faculty member Peter Burger. “We’re all looking forward to it,” said Burger shortly before the group’s depar ture Friday, Aug. 26. Burger said, “I’ve been packed for days.” Burger will be teaching a three credit hour American Government class during his five-week stay. He will be returning to the states earlier than the rest of the group to teach at Brevard. German and Logic are subjects Zednick will be teaching, and a mountaineering and Austrian culture class brings the possible credit hours available for each student to 16. The group will meet three times a week for classes, and will spend the remaining time explor ing the area’s museums and getting a taste of its culture through concerts and other events. The students chosen for this semester’s program were Holly Andrews of Mocksville, N.C.; Sara Booker of Smithfield, N.C.; Daven Davis of Mariet ta, Ga.; David Garcia of Key West, Fla.; Leroy Herman of Hickory, N.C.; Angie Rivercomb of Merchanicsville, Va., and Francis Wetherbee of Albany, Ga. Zednick’s idea is to continue the study each semester with different Brevard Col lege students in order to open their eyes to the everyday life of Austrian students.
