Soccer week %■ Hizzoner the new SGA president, Juan Kincaid, socks a header by Warren Nance The Brevard College Lady Tornadoes found it to be a rough weekend, when they took on previously ranked Meramec College of St. Louis and Monroe Com munity of Rochester, N.Y. in the 1988 Women’s Fall Soccer Classic Andrew College of Cuthbert, Ga., was supposed to l)e the fourth team, but cancelled at the last moment. In Sunday’s match-up, Brevard College took on Monroe Community College. The Lady Tornadoes were soundly defeated by the score of ll-o. In the 15 minutes of the first half, Monroe scored three goals. The fourth goal came with 16:25 left in the first half. Goalkeeper Kristi Foote of Brevard was taken out of the game and replaced by Mindy Garrison. Shortly after the switch, Monroe scored their fifth goal with 5:21 left in the first half. The sixth and final goal of the half came with 3:01 left in the half. The second half didn’t get any easier for the Lady Tor- naldes as five goals when into the Brevard net. The Saturday match-up between Ricky Surles and BC grad Jill Hair say they’re “BC proud.” Brevard College and Meramec College wasn’t as bad. The final score was 8-0. In just five minutes, Meramec scored on a header. The second goal came with 32 minutes left in the first half off a corner kick. In the last 20 minutes of the first half, Meramec scored two more goals. In the second half Meramec scored with 35:11 left. The last three goals were scored with 27:45,25:11 and 21:47 left in the game. A bright spot for Brevard came with 14:45 left in the game, when Brevard Col lege keeper Kristi Foote stopped a penalty kick. Foote also had a total of 31 saves on the day. Friday’s match-up between Meramec and Monroe proved to be the championship game of the tournament. The game went into double overtime and at the end of the overtime the score was still tied at 0-0. Then the game went into a shoot-out. A shoot-out is just like a penalty kick, but each team has five chances to score. The first four players from each team scored and it came down to Julie Miles of Meramec and Christine Byrnes of Monroe, Miles shot and scored and then Byrnes shot and missed. The final score was Meramec 5 and Monroe 4. Meramec rode off with the championship and Momw took second. by Robin Hanburger The Brevard College Men’s soccer team easily defeated Montreal Anderson Col lege last Thursday afternoon in a 4-0 shutout. In the first half the Brevard men scored three goals. Rusty Rogers and Stuart MeKenzie each had a goal, then Matt Blue scored after he was awarded a penalty shot. During the second half, Billy Koontz also scored by a direct kick. BC kept the ball on their offensive side throughout most of the game, and the other-team had the chance to score. Wednesday’s game against Anderson College, the defending Region 10 champs, gave Brevard the challenge they need to show their ability.
