Noise pollution not unheard of by Andrea Henry Boom! Bang! Screech! Do these noises sound like the ones you hear after you’ve finished stu dying for Dr. Alexander’s biology test, you’ve run your eight miles for the day, you’ve taken your shower, and you’ve climbed into bed ready to get your six hours of sleep before your early morning class? What do you hear? Silence? Nope. You hear someone else’s boom box blasting from halfway across campus. You think to yourself, “I’m never going to get to sleep,” and to your dismay, two hours later you’re still tossing and turning around listening to the same jam box. Campus noise. It’s fine at 2 p.m. in the afternoon, but not at 2 in the morning, especially if the song blasting from the radio isn’t even one you like. A couple of weeks ago, I was goofing off in my dorm room with my light on way past visitation and quiet hours, and some guy yelled outside for a girl in the dorm. Apparently the girl never came, so he kept yelling and began throwing rocks through my window thinking it was her room. Two rocks flew through the closed blinds onto the bed almost knocking down the radio before the guy realized that perhaps he had the wrong room. A couple of seconds later, he yelled up to confirm that indeed he had been throwing rocks in the wrong room and promptly ran out of view. It’s kind of funny, but at the same time, it’s a distraction. There are about 630 of us here trying to share our living spaces and remain com patible. Admittedly, it’s not the easiest of things, but keeping the boom box volume on a reasonable decibel level and not shouting across cam pus at reasonable hours surely do make for an easier time getting some Sl06p. /He oj ( 3ve fcwn-tolJ been ktepinj , o~ |noros+r uour room / Poets Corner 1 AM A STORM WITHIN MYSELF 1 am a storm within myself. I am sadness- the cloud that allows no sunshine to l)e seen. I am anger- the thunder that makes the world of those around tremble in fear. I am a tear- the raindrop that falls from my heavens whose existence was known by no one. I am ruthlessness- the bolt of lightning that unmercifully strikes anyone who moves amid its presence. Yet... I am tranquility- the eye of the storm that knows nothing except a silence and serenity sought by every living being. Both journalism honor students and Clarion veterans, Monteith and Conrad were promoted to the top positions in September. They are succeeding Bi^ Or- rell, who, after a year as editor, is stepping aside to pursue her academic studies and off-campus work. Monteith, a Bryson City, N.C., sophomore and journalism major, served last year as assistant editor. He is also a member of Phi Theta Keppa and an editor of the Pertelote. His off-campus activities include working as a reporter for the Times-News of Hendersonville. Conrad, a Sterling, Va., sophomore and journalism major, since last year has served as associate editor and a writer whom Clarion Advisor Jock Lauterer call ed “out first-string feature writer.” Four things to crow about Faculty/Administration Forum... I.orrie Diaz Dear Students, If there has ever been doubt about Brevard College being the number one two-year college in this country, such doubt should be erased by now. A number one faculty and facility have been in place now for some time. I believe we have just soared past other two-year schools with the additions of four new positions that will greatly enhance BC life. First is the position of TRANSFER COUNSELOR. If you have not met and sought out the service of Ms. Adelaide Miller, then you have something to do. Second is the position of COLLEGE COUNSELOR. Mr. Steve Martin is a real professional and is here to help with small or large problems. Please get to know him. It might interest you to know that even col lege presidents need him from time to time. Third is the position of COMMUNITY SERVICE COORDINATOR. Ms. Sybil Dodson will be giving direction to this ex citing idea. We are moving intentionally slow of this one. You will hear more about it in the spring. Fourth is the position of DIRECTOR OF OUTDOOR LEISURE RECREATION AND INTRAMURALS. Ms. Jan Gillean will offer tremendous leadership here. We must take full advantage of our environ ment. The weekends must be full of oppor tunities for us all. During the week Jan will give strong leadership to an expanded in tramural program. Intramurals have the potential of touching every student on the campus. Jan will join the BC family Oct. 17. I believe you have before you four new opportunities. I hope you will get to know all four of these individuals. All of them are dynamite! Your Friend Billy Greer
