Apathy appears to have reached epidemic proportions. So? Who cares? If this is your reaction, read on. In a world full of poverty, hunger, cor ruption, and crime, it can be easy to become pessimistic. Cynicism is our pro tective armor. While an armored suit r^ay protect us, it makes it difficult to par ticipate in an active life. Caring is being an active part of life. Many people think it is easier not to care. Yet active participation can give a person a feeling of influence. Influence is the easier and the better alternative com pared to passively watching life go by. There are other rewards to those who care. Think of the volunteers in the Alaskan whale rescue attempt. Their rewards will come as the whales swim to freedom. If the volunteers do not succeed, they know the whales were given the best possible chance. What a feeling it must be to know you made a difference! If you apathetically stand by, you CAN’T make a difference. Let’s start a caring promotion. No one can tell you what to care about. Your per sonal morals and values can help you decide. But become involved. Care about something. The next time someone shrugs his shoulders and says, “Who cares?”, answer him, “I DO.” Trudy Taylor Sophomore The deed is done, I guess. We now have a parking lot where grass used to be. The green earth that students not only used, but often favored as a field for an impromptu game of football or frisbee. Of course, students will find other places to play games. So, too, could other spots have been found for additional parking for day students and patrons of events at Dunham Auditorium. No place would have been more convenient, but almost anyplace would have been less unsightly. I would walk to preserve the natural beauty of the center of the campus. Wliat upsets me the most, however, is that this administration - the one famous for close interaction with the student body - didn’t even bother to ask nearly 700 students, all of whom pay money to live on this campus what they thought about the issue of an extra parking lot. And subject J r *1 o Sattnha^fo?w rettdy f OK the country? I don’t think so. I’ll be the first person to recognize the wonderful changes over the last three years that President Billy Greer and his team have made - changes ranging from faculty morale to student ac tivities to community support for our institution - but choosing this loca- tion ^r a parking lot was a bad move, and an inconsiderate one for those that s^t^ enjoyed the grass that grew in In short, ! addened that there is another black spot on campus and for me, and many others who love this place, Brevard College is just a llvllC 16SS ^l*G6n. Faculty/Administration Forum... Dear Students, After only a few weeks on campus, I am excited about the possibilities for an out door program and an expanded in tramural program. In order to plan the best possible pro grams, student input is invaluable. ntv Jot, A«NT PAnenrs TOP^T ? \fims WHATS ToPW/ o l-t PARWTS Hopefully, everyone had an opportunity to respond to the intramural/outdoor recrea tion questionnaire that was distrubuted last week. From the information gathered, we will focus the programs on those with brightest student interest. My goals for the outdoor program in cludes the offering of outdoor activities on weekends as well as providing resources for those wanting to plan their own trips. The possibilities for outdoor activities are excellent, considering the location of Brevard College. This area provides access to outstanding hiking trails, rockclimbing areas, whitewater rivers and ski areas. In addi tion to special trips, we will have instruc tional clinics and the availability of camp ing equipment for weekend use. The intramural program seems to have strong support among the students and I look for the program to continue to grow with more sport offering and increased participation. Co-ed volleyball is coming up and entry rosters have been sent out through the RA’s. Be sure and sign-up before Nov. 9. I am working on having an intramural representative on each residence hall floor. This will help students be better informed of the activities and facilitate the sport sign-ups. I am looking forward to getting to know you and hope you will be watching for trip announcements and intramural sign-ups. Stop by my office in 105 McLarty Goodson. Jan Gillean
