Spring Life and Culture Series is jam-packed
Brevard College’s concert, performance
and lecture series offers a varied menu of
special events to students.
This spring’s Life and Culture Series
begins with the annual Spring Convocation
on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 10:15 a.m. in
Dunham Auditorium. Bishop Bevel Jones,
who is also a BC Trustee, will be the guest
speaker. The convocation is held at the
beginning of each semester to officially
mark the new term.
Those interested in world ecology will
get a treat when Tim Knipe of the
Cousteau Society comes to BC on Tuesday,
Feb. 7, at 8:15 p.m. to show a presentation
called “Rediscovery of the World.” Under
the leadership of legendary Jacques
Cousteau, The Society is renowned for
fascinating films and documentaries on
nature’s hidden treasures.
The first concert of the semester
features the Verdehr Trio of Michigan
State University on Thursday, Feb. 23, at
8:15 p.m. in Dunham Auditorium. The
ensemble includes piano, violin and
clarinet.
"Saturday Night Live” fans will get an
earful on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 8:15 p.m. in
Dunham when author Doug Hill will re
count the tumultuous history of SNL from
its beginnings as an outlaw program pro
duced by an unruly band of comic
renegades through its evoluction into a
comedy institution. Hill’s program is titled
‘‘A Backstage History of Saturday Night
Live.”
The annual Staley Distinguished Scholar
Lecture series will be held on Tuesday and
Wednesday, March 21 and 22 in Dunham
Auditorium. The speaker and topic will be
announced.
Jazz is becoming synonymous with
Brevard these days, and the spring jazz
concert by the Brevard College Jazz
Ensemble will strengthen that connection.
Steve Kelly’s jazzists take the stage at
Dunham on Thursday, March 23, at 8:15
p.m.
Next, Choral Director Mark Nabholz has
his turn, at his Collegiate Singers present
their annual spring concert on Tuesday,
March 28, at 8:15 p.m. in Dunham.
Then, that weekend. Drama Professor
Sam Cope will present the spring drama in
the Barn Theatre, March 30 and 31; and
April 1,6,7, and 8, at 8:15. The show will be
announced.
The North Carolina Symphony comes to
Brevard College’s Boshamer Gymnasium
for a pops concert on Wednesday, April 5,
at 8:15 p.m. under the sponsorship of the
Brevard Chamber Orchestra. Jackson
Parkhurst, BCO founder, will come
“home” to Brevard to conduct the Sym
phony.
Finally, Steve Kelly’s Concert Band will
give its concluding program of the year
with the spring concert on Thursday, April
13, at 8:15 p.m. in Dunham.
Also, throughout the spring, the Brevard
College Art Department shows various art
films during the Tuesday night series,
shown at 6:30 p.m. in the library.
Each Tuesday night at 6:30 art films are
shown in the basement of Jones Library.
The film presentation is a part of the Life
and Culture Series and include: Jan. 17 —
the Greeks and the Romans, Jan. -24 —
Nevelson in Process, Creativity with Bill
Moyers; and Garbage: Another Way of
Seeing.
Jan. 31 — Spinning Dying, Weaving; and
Toys from the Fields.
Feb. 7 — Light of Experience, Feb. 14 —
Hero as Artist, Feb. 21 Worship of
Nature, Feb. 28 — Georgia O’Keefe.
March 14 — Fallacies of Hope, March 21
— Grain in the Stone, March 28 — The
World of Andrew Wyeth, and Art and the
Prison Crisis.
April 4 — Garden and Grid, April 11 —
The College is planning its first
Japanese Culture Week, Jan. 29 — Feb. 3,
according to Dean of the College Harry
Langley.
The special activity, which will include
four videofilms narrated by Jane
Seymour, will be held tentatively in Room
125 of McLarty-Goodson from 5:30 — 7
p.m. The films will provide “a comprehen
sive look at Japan of today as a direct
descendant of the Japan of the shoguns
and samurai.”
The four films and dates include: Jan. 29
— “The Electronic Tribe;” Jan. 30 — “The
Sword and the Chrysanthemum;” Jan. 31
Arshile Gorky, and Art Conservator; April
18 — Cherokee Indian Basketry, and Face
Jugs and Folk Pots.
The Life and Culture Series events are
free to BC students. The Spring Drama
production requires tickets, but they too
are free, and may be picked up at the
receptionist’s desk in Beam Administra
tion Building.
For the general public, the events are
free, with the exception of the Spring
Drama. Tickets may be purchased from
the College receptionist. For more infor

“A Proper Place in the World.”
The first film will be moderated by Dr.
Ken Yamada, associate general secretary
of the Board of Higher Education of the
United Methodist Ministry. The last film
will be moderated by Dr. Ken Nishimura,
president of the East-West Foundation and
currently with Oglethorpe University of
Atlanta.
The four films will be free to BC
students.
The week will conclude with a special
dinner prepared by Japanese students on
Feb. 3.
