News Bureau Four Brevard College musicians won their division in the annual Ivey’s Young Artist’s Competition in Asheville this weekend. “It was a clean sweep,” said an exultant Tony Sirianni, a Brevard College faculty member who accompanied the four win ners. Sirianni said, “I couldn’t be prouder. They were up against people from the N.C. School of the Arts, WCU, Appalachian ,and Warren Wilson.” About 40 young musicians competed and only six were named finalists in wind, str ing, and piano divisions. The winners were Brian Cashwell, a freshman piano student from Americus, Ga.; Andrew Rogelberg, a freshman piano student from Hendersonville; Anita Cocks, a freshman bassoon student from Martinez, Ga.; and Christian Hinkle, a sophomore trumpet student from Mount Airy Cocks was accompanied by Katherine Morgan, Brevard College faculty member. Sirianni pointed out that Brevard Col- won in every category it entered. The annual competition, consisting of preliminaries on Saturday and finals on Sunday, earns the four musicians the right to appear with the Asheville Symphony Or chestra. He is an ex ceptionally talented cyclist and his winn ings are many. Introducing...Stephen Faust! Born and raised in Raleigh, N.C., Steve was first inspired to be a cyclist at age six teen. “My sister’s boyfriend at the time raced bikes and I thought it was neat,” he said with a smile on his face. It was then that he began setting his athletic goals. "1 want to be professional by age 23 and rac ing in Europe, ” Steve explained. Because Steve s cycling lakes him all over the United States, support, both finan cial and emotional from his parents helps him to get that “spirit”. His family plays an important role in his motivation and en thusiasm. For the past three and a half years. Steve has achieved a great deal. Among his major accomplishments are the follow ing: —1986: First place Raleigh Times Road Race—(30 miles) —1986: First place Georgia Road Race—(30 miles) —1987: First place Willmington, N.C. Road Race—(60 miles) —1987: Sixth place State Time Trial Championship (25 miles) —1988: Sixth place State Road Race Championship —1988: Third place State Time Trial Championship—(25 miles) —1988: First Place Asheville, N.C. Road Race—(60 miles) —1988: First Place Williamsburg. VA. Road Race—(60 miles) —1988: First Place Willmington, N.C.
