(Clarion photo by Jock Lauterer) BC men hit rough streak by Charlie Dino ('.larinn He/xinpr The Brevard College Men’s Soccer Team started early October off on a good foot by defeating Truitt McConell by the score of 3-0 away from home, which has been one of our team’s big weaknesses this season. Goals were scored by Stuart McKenzie, Terry Agawa and Kurt Lehnert. The team’s next game was held here at Brevard against Montreat-Anderson Col lege, Oct. 10. This game had a big revenge factor for the Brevard team. Montreal beat BC in overtime earlier this season. But this time the BC team didn’t waste any time in showing Montreal that Brevard meant Business. The Tornadoes beat Montreat-Anderson by a score of 4-1 behind the two goals of Kurt Lehnert and the eleven saves of goalkeeper Dave Sim mers. The sun was looking up for the Brevard soccer team when Spartanburg Methodist College rolled into town on Oct. 14. Brevard was highly psyched for the Homecoming game. This year’s Brevard team gamed respect from the Brevard Col lege Alumni by playing Spartanburg very hard throughout the match. The score ended up scoreless through regulation time behind the 10 saves of Dave Simmers and the five saves of An drew Zeldin, but that didn’t prove to be enough because the Spartanburg team scored in overtime to beat the Tornadoes 1-0. The Tornadoes next traveled to meet the arch- rivals, the Lees McRae College Bob cats. This meant that BC was at a disad vantage due to the opposing crowd at Lees McRae. The Tornadoes played a very hard-fought game, but in the end, they fell at the hands of the Bobcats by a score of 3-1. The Tornadoes only had three shots on goal and five saves, but the bright spot was Brevard’s leading scorer, Kurt Lehnert. The team should bounce l)ack from these two close losses to their usual selves. The Tornadoes have a lot of talent that should come together and click when it really counts. The team’s Region X Conference record is now 3-4. Mother nature strikes baseball 729 total, good enough lor sixth place in the tournament, which was won by Chowan College. Scott Grubbs led Brevard with a 174, which tied him for 9th place individually. Brevard’s next tournament was the Gardner-Webb Invitational, held Oct. 26 and 27 in Shelby, N.C. by Scott Holmes Clarion Sports Editor So I was wrong. So I made a bad pick. Big Deal! So sue me why don’t you!. The Cubbies didn’t do so hot in the playoffs, but it wasn’t the first time, and I doubt that it will be the last. The Oakland A’s are doing quite well in the playoffs. They beat the Toronto Blue Jays in five games and were leading the San Francisco Giants two games to none when tragedy struck. Approximately 5 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, 8 p.m. Eastern Time, a major earth quake hit the San Francisco area, measur ing a 7.0 on the Richter scale. As of this date, October 19, over 300 people were kill ed in the disaster. Part of the Golden Gate Bridge was broken apart, buildings were crumbled and destroyed, and a major fire broke out which covered approximately two blocks of the city. Now this may seem a bit stupid to say, but the earthquake forced Baseball Com missioner Fay Vincent to postpone the rest of the World Series until it can be played safely. At this time, the Series was to be postponed for a least a week, but by the time this article will be printed, the Series could be over or it could still be postponed. It’s quite hard for me to understand how anyone could really worry about the rest of the World Series when you have hundreds of people killed and millions in a state of shock and paranoia. I mean. I’m a big sports fan and baseball is my favorite sport, but I just don’t see the rush in get ting the Series back underway. I think that everything should be down to a mild shock before baseball should even be thought about being played again. First of all. Candlestick Park in San Francisco was slightly damaged by the quake. The park should be checked out quite thoroughly before people are allowed in it. And that shouldn’t be taken care of until the rest of the city is at least halfway under control. Secondly, why can’t the Series be moved to another park if it is to be played at all% Los Angeles is just down the road and I’m quite sure that given the condition that San Francisco is in, Los Angeles would be more than happy to accommodate the rest of the Series. It’s true that the home field advantage would be lost, but their home was almost lost. «*« While I’m in the mood, why is everyone making such a fuss about the hiring of Art Shell as the Los Angeles Raiders’ head coach. Just because he is black doesn’t make him any different from any other coach. Why don’t teams say that Joe Bob was hired as the white head coach of the Hoboken Bums. What difference does it make that the man is black? He is a human being just like the rest of us. What he should be judged by, if anything, is the way he coaches. Does he have the ability to do the job in the NFL. That is the only judg ment needed. *** In local news, the Brevard College sports teams are really doing a great job, especially the women’s soccer team. They are ranked fourth in the nation and are really rocking on. Good job ladies! The basketball season is ready to get un drway. The men are looking really good. They have five sophomores returning and a good crop of freshmen. Besides, when you have Marcus Allen doing nothing but shooting, you can’t go too wrong. But seriously though, the team looks well- balanced and ready for the season. The women are also looking very good. Coach Radford has the girls pumped for the oncoming season and I definitely believe that this will be a great year for the girls. I also expect a great year from my good friend Katie Trexler. I asked her, begged her really, to put some seriously high numbers on the b^rd, but as long as they win. I’ll be satisfied. See ya later.
