Page 8 Feb. 12, 1990 The Clarion BC to host College Day Brevard College will host another College Day program on Monday, March 5, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. in the Rutherford Room of the A.G. Myers Dining Hall. This event will feature institutions both in North Carolina and other states with whom BC has direct transfer agreements and contracts and private colleges and senior universities in North Carolina. A total of 85 institutions have been invited from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida, Virginia, Indiana, Ohio, California, Michigan, South Dakota, Illinois, Alabama, New York, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia. Transfer Counselor Miller says this will be the last chance for BC students to meet college reprensentatives on this campus this academic year. AH students are urged to attend this program. The representatives will answer questions for interested students concerning courses and nnancial aid. They will also have brochures, pamplets, and other information available. She says the BC admissions staff has stated that admissions counselers do remember the faces and names of students thay meet on tour. It is important, therefore, that students contact in person the representatives of the schools on which they are interested so their names will be on record when they apply. Since the deadline for applying to all institutions is drawing near, this would be a good time to meet those representatives from schools that are not as well known to them and to learn about the benefits they offer. Miller adds that most private schools have excellent scholarship funds, and students might fmd that with ample Financial aid the cost could be less or the same at a private school as at a public school. Students will find that the same small classes, and concerned, caring academic atmosphere that Brevard College offers is also available to them at private four-year institutions. Freshman in particular are encouraged to be present at this event. It is not too early for tham to be making transfer plans. Miller says. The following colleges and universities will have representatives attending College Day. North Carolina: Campbell University, Catawba College, Gardner- Webb College, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Montreat-Anderson College, Pfeiffer College, and Queens College. South Carolina; Central Wesleyan, Clemson University, Coker College, Converse College, Limestone College, Presbyterian College, and Wofford College. Tennessee, Tusculum College. Virginia, Averett College and Shenandoah College and Conservatory. Georgia, Berry College and LaGrange College. Dean "Doc" Wood, in and out of the classroom. photo by Jock Lauterer) 'Dean Doc' reflects... on her first semester: ‘Like being a freshman again... ’ by Russ Evans Clarion Senior Reporter "Like being a freshman in college again, with meetings, problems, and lots to learn." That's what Dean Wood had to say about her Hrst semester as Dean of the College here at BC. Wood said that her first semester, the fall of '89, as Dean was exciting, but also frightening. For the first time in several years, she didn't have to go to class with the roll and syllabus in hand and get class started, but she said that she missed it When the position of Dean of the College came open. Dean Wood (then "Doc" Wood) was asked to take over that position, and she was more than ready for it She says the first priority for this year is to reevaluate and strenghten the academic support system so that students can be prepared academically for larger colleges and universities, and be otherwise "successful and independent when they leave here." Dean Wood would also like to give the faculty what tlicy need to support and help students. Next on the list is to get tlie service component geared up for the upcoming class of '92. She along with Sybil Dodson and other faculty members, have been working on this project and it's just about ready to go into action. Dean Wood says it is funny noticing how former students of hers stumble over whether to call her "Doc," or "Dean," but says that her favorite is "Dean Doc." She also commented on how she appreciates it when students stop her in the hall to say hello or to remind her of their names. Dean Wood is back into teaching this semester. She has a Creative Writing Class. "I love it," she says. Although Wood likes her position as Dean of the College, she plans to get back to teaching full time in the future. And just how has being the Dean of the College changed her perspective on teaching? Dean Wood said; "It has made me realize even more than I did before how important it is to have quality teachers, and support those teachers, and it's increased the value I place on teachers who are always learning as well as teaching. It's actually driven me to miss having a red pen in my hand." College to hold Jail-a-Thon for ACS by Marylou Cordovez Clarion Reporter It has come to our attention that their are fugitives and criminals stalking the corridors and pathways of our campus. Yes, crime is spreading through Brevard College like cancer, and here is your chance to strike back. On March 28 between the hours of 12:30 and 5:30 p.m., Brevard Secret Service SWAT teams under the command of Sybil Dodson and on the behalf of the American Cancer As sociation will be issuing warrants for the arrest af these criminals upon notification of their whereabouts. The simulated arrests and incarcera tions will take place as a benefit for the ACS called a "Jail-a-thon." The process is extremely simple and will offer great reward and satisfaction . for both students and the ACS. To initiate an arrest all one has to do is fill out a form that may be obtained in the Administration Building. At that point the "criminal" will be notified of their criminal status and when they are to be "arrested." On the date of the arrest the subject will be "captured" and detained in a makeshift prison in front of the Administration Building. The "prisoner" will be alotted one phone call provided by the ACS. This phone call will allow the prisoner to contact a fi’iend or loved one for bail money. The comdemned ones will have to wear striped, jail clothing while kept prisoners. Bail will be set for each prisoner at the time of the arrest, and must meet it in order to be released. That bail money will stand as a pledge donation to the ACS. Be mindful when filling your complaint that these arrests are not restricted to student body alone but faculty and staff may be arrested as well. Any students willing to volunteer and help out will recieve a free T-shirt, and have the pleasure of knowing that they are helping society in general. While held in jail, the "cons" in striped jail clothing will get a Poloroid picture taken for fi«e. This fund-raiser not only will help the ACS but it will also involve fim for the participants and the spectators. This is the second Clarion produced on the Macintosh IICX Desktop Publishing System at a savings in printing costs of approx. $150 for this issue. I
