Concert Band set for Spring Concert, April 24
The Brcvaid College Conccrt Band,
conducted by Steven Kelly, will present
its Spring Concert on Tuesday, April
24, at 8:15 pm in Dunham Auditorium
on the Brevard College campus. The
ensemble will perform a variety of
compositions including works by
Grainger, Ives and Wagner.
The Brevard College Concert Band
is comprised of 46 students at Brevard
College. Though most students are
music majors, a wide variety of other
majors are represented. Students in the
band have gone on to study at some of
the finest music institutions in the
United States including schools such as
Florida State University, The University
of Miami, UNC-Grensboro, The
University of Georiga, The Cincinnati
Conservatory of Music and Furman
University. The ensemble has performed
for the North Carolina Music Educators
Association and throughout the
southeast United States.
The program, which is a part of the
College's Life and Culture series, is free
of charge and the public is cordially
invited to attend.
The "Intellectual Society" meets during a
performance of Tennessee Williams' "Summer and
Smoke," which enjoyed two successful weekends

Percussion
Ensemble and
Brass Quintet
to perform
Brevard College’s Percussion
Ensemble and the Brass Quintet will be
featured in a concert this Tuesday, April
17, at 8:15 p.m. in Dunham
Auditorium.
The concert is a presentation of the
Brevard College Fine Arts Division,
There is no admission charge, and the
public is invited.
Leading off the evening, The BC
Percussion Ensemble, under the
direction of Diane Daniel, has given
numerous performances throughout
North Carolina. They were honored
recently with an invitation to perform at
the N.C. Percussive Arts Society Day
of Percussion.
The Percussive Arts Society is a
professional organization which
promotes the development of percussion
education, performance and the
publication of percussion literature. The
audience at this event was composed of
high school and college students, music
educators and performers from the two
Carolinas and Georgia.
The members of the BC Percussion
Ensemble are: Mark Cornick, Gary
Guthrie, Lisa Brooks, Rachel Welch and
Brady Barnett.
The works to be performed include
Scherzo and Cadenza by Charles
DeLaney, Lasciatemi Morire by Claudio
Monteverdi, Inventions on a Motive by
Michael Colgrass, The Velvet Tear by
Manheim Steamroller and Percussion
Music by Michael Colgrass.
The second part of the evening's
concert will be provided by the Brass
Quintet, made up of P.L. Malcolm,
trumpet; Cindy Fuller, trumpet; Kristin
Kelly, horn; Bruce Sons, trombone; and
Jason Smith, tuba.
Included in the works scheduled to
be played by the Quintet is an original
work by BC's Dr. Larry Whatley. Brass
Quintet No. 1 was written by the
Brevard College music professor in
1969. Quintet Director Kristin Kelly
says, "We are really excited that we are
getting the opportunity to perform a
piece by a member of our faculty."
Other works to be performed include
Canzona per sonare No. 2 by Giovanni
Gabrieli, El Capitan March by John
Philip Sousa and Ain't Misbehavin' by
Fats Waller.
The Quintet just recendy performed
a recital at the Cedar Mountain
Community Center. In addition, they
will perform soon at an annual meeting
of Southeastern attorneys which
includes such important figures as U.S.
Attorney General Kennedy. That event
will take place at the Grove Park Inn in
Asheville.
