If you're a Jreshman, you've got lots to look * forward when you return this fall. On April 21. 1989, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for the new student union. Completion was originally planned for the end of March, 1990. It is now delayed to the extent that, according to Dean of Student Affairs Nonn Wiiek "It'll not be ready at all this semester." Dale Wiener, the Director of Financial Affairs and supervisor of the construction of the new building, says that one of the reasons for the delay in construction was the abnormally heavy rains of last summer. Triad Construction Company, the contractor hired to build the new student union, is expected to complete their operations in mid-April. However, after construction is finished, carpet and furniture will have to be placed in the building, and finishing touches added. This will take from six to eight weeks, according to Witek and Wiener. The lower level of the new student union will house a patio, a game room that will consist of six pool tables, six video games, three ping-pong tables, a juke box, bathrooms, and two offices. The main floor will house a meeting room, a snack bar with a juke box. bathrooms, a bookstore and storage room, mailboxes, and a main lounge with two small lounges for commuter students. The second floor will have all of the offices of Student Affairs that are currently housed in Stamey. The snack bar will be run by ARA. However, the bookstore will be under new management by College Bookstores of America and will feature many new items in the store inventory. The result of this combination will provide "a one-stop-shopping, central area where students can meet and socialize," says Wiener. Hours of operation for the various activities in the union building will be finalized in the future. Opening hours planned so far are as follows: game room, Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday from So near and yet so far... BC’s new Coltrane Student Union is finished on the outside, but all the finishing touches inside will take another month, officials say. ARA will decide the snack bar hours according to the hours most used by students. "There will be a full-time watchman," says Witek, "for supervision in all the building, mainly the game room." After the building is cleared by the Triad Company, tours will be given to any student who may want to see the inside of the building, according to Witek.
