The Clarion April 30, 1990 Page 5 What to expect at Brevard College next year by Ashley Cimino Clarion Associate Editor As the spring semester comes to a close, Brevard College faculty and administration are busy preparing for the upcoming fall semester. Director of Housing Kevin Binkley is in the process of placing freshmen and sophomores in the campus dorms and residential facilities. Lately, talk has been of East and West Beam switching to accommodate a changing ratio in the mal^female student populaton. Binkley says, "The way things are looking now it probably won't switch. We won't know until probably late June when we have a definite number of enrolled students." Binkley adds, "However, there is no question that over 98% of the rooms will be filled." Room assignments for groups of students are as follows: Ross Hall will house men runners and honor students. The Cottage will house men music majors. The Duplex will house male honor students. The Complex will house female honor students. First and second floor East Beam will house mainly sophomores. Third floor East Beam will house freshmen. Basement through second floor West Beam will house mainly sohomores. Third floor West Beam will house freshmen. East Jones will house female sophomores. West Jones will house female freshmen. Taylor basement will house men soccer players. First floor Taylor will house mainly sophomores. Second floor and third floor Taylor will house male freshmen. Green basement will house men's basketball and golf. First floor will house mainly sophomores. Second and third floor Green will house freshmen. Personnel Changes Several RDs are not returning and will be replaced. These are Kevin Binkley, Barry Tadlock, and Cindy Pickens. However, the remaining RDs do have housing assignments. Sharon Waggy will preside over the Complex and the Duplex, Jeff Battle will remain as the RD of Green, Alice Kemp will be in Ross, and Sybil Dodson will remain as the RD of West Beam. According to Dean of Admission Robert McLendon, it is another record breaking year in the number of pre registered freshmen enrollments. As of April 14, there are 330 pre-registered freshmen, consisting of 150 females and 180 males. Brevard College houses 655 boarding students. " There are already about 307 sophomores pre-registered," says Binkley. "With the figures presented we’re looking at about a 60/40 freshmen /sophomore ratio for next year." This is the largest number of people pre-registered in the history of Brevard, however Dean McLendon states that these figures are just slightly higher than last year's record enrollment Nationwide this record enrollment is surprising, says McLendon, when you take into consideration the 17 1019-year- old population decline that is supposed to be in effect until 1993. There have also been over 5000 fewer high school graduates in North Carolina over the past couple of years. Dean McLendon attributes the 1989 and 1990 enrollment success to a well organized Admissions Office and program. He also explains that institutions like Brevard appeal to students. He says," Two-year residential private colleges are unique; there are only 162 in the United States... many students like the concept" Kevin Binkley believes that the record enrollment yields a serious freshmen class. He says," As the enrollment has increased over the past couple of years, behavior has improved. An early admissions cutoff equals better, more serious students." So, with this record enrollment, is BC raising its standards for acceptance? Dean McLendon says that is a natural reflex to be more selective, however, there will be no enormous change in acceptance qualifications. He adds," Brevard does have high expectations and those wouldn't change no matter what the class looked liked... its not just recruiting higher SAT scores, its trying to recruit a student to match Brevard." Faculty Changes Along with a slightly larger freshmen class, some faculty members are rettiming , while others are leaving. Devin and Sharon Brown, husband and wife team, are leaving BC to work on their doctorates at USC-Columbia. Math instructor Theresa Bright is leaving to work on her doctorate. Doug Rogers is going on sabbatical; he also plans to work on his master's degree in physical education. Henry Miller, professor of music, is leaving on a one-year sabbatical. Peter Burger, associate professor of history and political science, is leaving on a one semester sabbatical in the fall. Eugene Lovely, professor of history, is leaving on a one semester sabbatical next spring. Reading instructor Naomi Gibbs is leaving to work on her master s degree in developmental education at ASU. Registrar Cheryl Hallowell is leaving to work on her doctorate. Joyce Jackson will take her place. Returning faculty will include Professor of Music and Theatre Arts Sam Cope, Associate Professor of English Ken Chamlee, and Dr. David Wetmore, professor of computer science. All have been on sabbaticals from BC. Dean Wood is very optimistic about the upcoming year. She hopes that the size and seriousness of this year's freshmen class will have a good influence on next year's freshmen class. She says, "If the students can demonstrate the kind of maturity that can shown, then some really exciting things can happen." Dean McLendon is also very excited about next year. He says,"I have met most of next year's freshmen... I like the looks of them. I'm also dam proud of this year's class. Its been an incredible year. A lot of Kreat things can be attributed to this year's freshman class and I think the same will be tnie next year." • According to Steve Woodson, director of security, security will not only be better qualified but they'll also have a new look. "We're looking at adding a couple of more guards and training the other ones we have," says Woodson. "Security will be trained in fire, emergency medical, and police." Security will also have new uniforms. However, Woodson adds that there will be no increase or decrease in rules or regulations. Other things to expect for the 1990- 91 year are a finished Student Union building, preparations for BC intercol legiate baseball, more mountain interest PE courses, and stronger learning assis tance programs. Phones next fall? by Libby Enloe Clarion Associate Editor Whatever happened to the idea of telephones in student's dorms? According to Director of Financal Affairs Dale Weiner, things have been active, but it's all still in the "ir stage. Plans are still tentative. "We have been very busy working with Citizens Telephone company and the local cable company," he says. Weiner believes if approved, the plans call for putting all existing above ground telephone wires underground in one trench. "Within 30 days, we should have the cost data." Not only is the College looking at the possibility of providing telephones in dorm rooms, but also cable TV hook-ups and oudets for personal computers which would be tied in with the campus' own computer network. "The question now, though," says Weiner, "is can we afford it and is it feasible?" "All these changes,” he says, "will be made in phases." As far as having more pay telephones installed around campus, he states, "The pay phones are very expensive. The College doesn't get any revenue from them." He adds, "In fact, it costs us, (the College), to install them." He is confident that, "Once we have phones in the rooms, then the need for pay phones should decrease." Weiner stresses that, "These are all tentative plans at the moment, but," he adds,"If we get the go- ahead, we'd like to get one dorm equipiped with telephones by the fall." He concludes, "We’re doing everything we can to make it happen." Sophomore artists recently opened a showing in Dunham lobby, From left to right, the artists are Tracey Norman, Cat Carris, Michael VanVuren, and David Epstein.
