The Brevard College Men's Soccer
Team started the 1990 season with a
bang, winning the Mitre / Brevard
College Fall Classic held here at Brevard
College, September 7-9.
In the championship game Sunday
the Tornadoes faced Allegheny Com
munity College from Pittsburgh, Pa.
Defense was the key to the game due to
the muddy conditions of the field. Al
legheny scored first at the 21:19 mark of
the first half. That goal woke up the
Tornado defense. And then the Tornado
offense got started.
Brevard tied the score at 1-1 when
Dean Fuller scored his second goal of
the tournament at the 8:55 mark of the
first half. Fuller's goal gave the
Tornadoes added confidence. At the 4:22
mark sophomore Mike McAvoy scored
to put the Tornados up 2-1.
Allegheny came back and scored
to tie the game at two-all. Kyle Keigl
replaced the injured Chris Schuler and
scored on a header to put the Tornados
up 3-2 at halftinie.
The second half was a tough
defensive struggle. But Allegheny
managed to score to tie the game at 3-3.
Both teams exchanged shots on
goal but they were unsuccessful. And
the game ended as a tie. Brevard won the
tournament by means of goal differen
tial. The Tornadoes scored eight goals
while giving up only three. Allegheny
came in second scoring five goals and
giving up only three.
BC Coach Dave Taylor said, "Our
defense was the key to winning the tour
nament. The two shutouts in the first
two games made the difference. It's a
great start to the season."
Goalie Andrew Zeldin said, "We
came into this tournament ready; we
have great depth; Everyone did a great
job in the muddy conditions. It was a
tough day to play but we were ready. I
very happy."
On Saturday the Tornadoes faced
Frederick College of Maryland and the
Tornadoes were ready. Mike McAvoy
scored one of his two goals of the tour
nament. Also contributing to the
scoring was Michael Louter. The
Tornadoes prevailed 2-0.
In Friday's first round face-off
against Region X rival Spartanburg
Methodist, the Tornadoes won 3-0. This
'^as a tough game for the Tornadoes but
