The Clarion September 17, 1990 Page 11 BC Wins Fall Classic Tournament by Scott Grubbs Clarion Sports Reporter The Brevard College Men's Soccer Team started the 1990 season with a bang, winning the Mitre / Brevard College Fall Classic held here at Brevard College, September 7-9. In the championship game Sunday the Tornadoes faced Allegheny Com munity College from Pittsburgh, Pa. Defense was the key to the game due to the muddy conditions of the field. Al legheny scored first at the 21:19 mark of the first half. That goal woke up the Tornado defense. And then the Tornado offense got started. Brevard tied the score at 1-1 when Dean Fuller scored his second goal of the tournament at the 8:55 mark of the first half. Fuller's goal gave the Tornadoes added confidence. At the 4:22 mark sophomore Mike McAvoy scored to put the Tornados up 2-1. Allegheny came back and scored to tie the game at two-all. Kyle Keigl replaced the injured Chris Schuler and scored on a header to put the Tornados up 3-2 at halftinie. The second half was a tough defensive struggle. But Allegheny managed to score to tie the game at 3-3. Both teams exchanged shots on goal but they were unsuccessful. And the game ended as a tie. Brevard won the tournament by means of goal differen tial. The Tornadoes scored eight goals while giving up only three. Allegheny came in second scoring five goals and giving up only three. BC Coach Dave Taylor said, "Our defense was the key to winning the tour nament. The two shutouts in the first two games made the difference. It's a great start to the season." Goalie Andrew Zeldin said, "We came into this tournament ready; we have great depth; Everyone did a great job in the muddy conditions. It was a tough day to play but we were ready. I very happy." On Saturday the Tornadoes faced Frederick College of Maryland and the Tornadoes were ready. Mike McAvoy scored one of his two goals of the tour nament. Also contributing to the scoring was Michael Louter. The Tornadoes prevailed 2-0. In Friday's first round face-off against Region X rival Spartanburg Methodist, the Tornadoes won 3-0. This '^as a tough game for the Tornadoes but were ready. Patrick Taylor scored first goal just minutes into the 8^e. Dean Fuller scored next to make it 2-0. Kip Lowery finished Brevard's scoring. The schedule for the next two weeks: Wednesday, Sept. 19, away at Anderson; Saturday, SepL 22, away at Lees-McRae; Friday, Sept. 28, away at Montreat Anderson; and then back home on Wednesday, Oct. 3, against Anderson.
