Page 12 September 17, 1990 The Clarion BC runs strong against Wolfpack by John Wellenhofer Clarion Sports Editor Brevard College's men's cross country team made a strong showing against the visiting Wolfpack of N.C. State Saturday when the Tornadoes hosted the Brevard Collegte Invitational Cross Country meet at DuPont's Guion Farm. NCSU finished 1,3,4,6,8,9 and 11 to score the winning low of 23. But BC wasn't far behind the Division 1 NCAA powerhouse with a score of 35 coming from 2,4,7,10,12,13, and 14th place finishes. BC thrashed USC-Spartanburg which finished a distant third with 85 poinLs over the five mile course. The Torndoes were led by: Jeff Campbell in 2nd with a 27:23, Craig Goodroe in 4th with a 27:50, John Massie in 7th with a 28:13, and Marrill Hausenfluck in 10th with a 28:40. The Lady Tornadoes were dominated by the nationally-ranked women from State who scored a perfect 15 over the 5K course. BC's top finisher was Allyson Cottrell in 7th with a 21:51. Heather Weldon was 2nd with 22:15. BC's team score was 45. Team Preview The men's and women's XC teams have never looked stronger and more ready for the upcoming competition. The men's team has six returning sophomores, including NJCAA All- Americans Jeff Campbell, Craig Goodroe and '90 5K national champ Chris Grigggs. The latter half of the team is strongly backed by dark horse power houses such as veteran John Massie, Merrill Hausenfluck and Mike Kinne. Led by top runners Heather Weldon and Holly Higgins, the women's team is a force to be reckoned with.
