The only way of stopping it is with a compromise. All letters must be signed. Dude men are created equal, and they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness..." What I am referring to here is bigotry (commonly defined as a pred- judice against a racial or religious group), a current threat to what could be a peaceful Brevard College society. Our founding fathers went to their graves satisfied that their efforts to create equality throughout their beloved nation were not wasted. However, recent evidence of bigotry on our campus has insulted that sacred document. Dean of the College Dr. Clara Wood spoke to the Christian Student Fellowship about this issue Tuesday night, Sept. 25. Says Doc," On this campus, as well as across the country, the world, etcetera, bigotry is alive and well." I've always believed that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Personal pfeferences should be regarded and respected by others. This is not only a racial or ethical issue, but also a complicated acceptance phobia people have acquired. Articles I and XIII of The Constitution of The United States speak of abolishing religious bigotry and eliminating slavery. Why then are we trying to pursue a predjudice that was outlawed in 1787? Slavery created such a corrupt society and although we haven't retreated to that extreme, we are, however, religiously inclined to exclude followers of a religion other than our own. How can a Life be lived without Liberty? How can Happiness be achieved in a bigoted world? This is what we're faced with, and we don't have one concrete solution. We only have examples such as Doc Wood's cry for help, "Please become sensitive to it. If it feels appropriate, speak out about it If not, befriend those you see being ostracized by it" Poets Corner by Nicole File Peace These are the sounds of winter... A sudden, hurried stream of chilled water Breaks through the ice of a waterfall Like happy tears. A deer snorts mist in a clearing Then vanishes into the fog without a sound And all is quiet again. Notes, brittle as ice, can be shattered by the tension of a single finger. A running hill of music Brings a heartbreak of melody Then drifts down. Almost silently. One sound by One, Until silence reigns. A pianissimo drop of liquid grace Hangs suspended from a leaf. And a bird shivers white cold dust from its back. A tiny river of water flings itself headlong through a snowy stream-bank, And tumbles precariously into a newly- formed pool. And I, leave quiedy. Walking back the way I have come.
