Morgan, a music performance major at Mars Hill College, says that BC initialed her love for music. "The core of me lies in music," she says, "BC gave me a chance to perform." The Pfafftown, N.C., native is still in awe at her crown. "It is some thing that every little girl dreams of." She says that representing North Carolina in the Miss America Pagacnt was "a wonderful -experience". "Just being Miss North Carolina is an honor for me." Morgan also says that pageants have changed over the years. "It's a self- improvement program now," she says It s not just a beauty pagaent anymore." Morgan affirms that her background at BC helps reinforce her level of achievement "I expect a lot out of myself," she says. "When you per form, people deserve to hear your best" Morgan encourages BC students to "be true to yourself. Listen to the people around you but listen to yourself also." She concludes, "You are the one who knows what you need to do." Talent show announced by Alejandro Hernandez Clarion Reporter The 1990 Talent Show is just around the comer. Rehearsals will begin on Oct. 17, from 7-10 p.m. in the Dunham Music Center, in preparation for the chosen Oct. 26 date for the talent show. The show starts at 8:15 p.m. and is also in Dunham. Audition dates have not been scheduled as of yet This is due to the availability of equipment necessary for the audition. Hanger rocks BC and boosts morale by William T. Greer III Clarion Reporter Fall Convocation speaker Howard Hanger rocked Brevard College students with his music and his words. Hanger's jazz trio. Jazz Fantasy, performed in Dunham Auditorium Sept 19. Hanger and his Jazz Fantasy performed a selection of songs ranging from Bach to "Hill Street Blues". In between selections. Hanger told BC students, "Intelligence is not all it takes to get through life." "Where do you find the spirit?" the United Methodist minister and graduate of Emory University and Chandler Divinity School asked BC students. "When you find the spirit," he said, "It will be easier to make it through life." He continued, "The spirit is alive and everywhere. It can be found in music. The blues is a good place to look for that holy spirit." Hanger told BC students the blues were born out of misery, and through singing and playing the blues, one can gain the strength of spirit to get through tough times. "The idea in the blues is pulse," he said, "The blues is rooted in that pulse. The pulse is everywhere; you just have to pick up on it and ride it" Two people Hanger used as examples of finding that "pulse" were jazz musician Louie Armstrong and Tony Clarke-Sayer, founder of the Asheville-Buncombe Community Christian Ministry Shelter for the homeless. After pointing out that most people count on looks, fame or money to be successful, he said, "Neither of them were good looking. Both," he said, "connected with the spirit." Hanger concluded by, urging BC students to,"Never let anyone tell you that you do not have a gift." 'Big Ten' named by Sharon Young Clarion Reporter There's a new organization on campus designed to promote leadership involvement This group is called "The Big Ten." The purpose of "The Big Ten" is to try and make life at Brevard a little better, according to BC President Billy Greer, who originated the idea. Members will share their ideas, and concepts with the school deans. This will help students and teachers have a better feel for issues concerning Brevard students. Members of the "Big Ten" include: Clarion Co-Editors Libby Enloe and Ashley Cimino, Pertelote Editor Marcia Ashworth, SGA President Loke Kue, PTK President Kellie Tagtmeyer, Service Corps spokesperson Thomas Smith, Fellowship of Christian Athletes President Christy Gibbs, Chief Marshal Eric Chason, Commuter President Burney Mack and Student Ambassador President Derrick Briggs. r tells his BC audience . ® spirit while bassist Elliot Wopodian gets into a riff.
