and boosts morale

Fall Convocation speaker Howard
Hanger rocked Brevard College students
with his music and his words. Hanger's
jazz trio. Jazz Fantasy, performed in
Dunham Auditorium Sept 19.
Hanger and his Jazz Fantasy
performed a selection of songs ranging
from Bach to "Hill Street Blues". In
between selections. Hanger told BC
students, "Intelligence is not all it takes
to get through life."
"Where do you find the spirit?" the
United Methodist minister and graduate
of Emory University and Chandler
Divinity School asked BC students.
"When you find the spirit," he said, "It
will be easier to make it through life."
He continued, "The spirit is alive and
everywhere. It can be found in music.
The blues is a good place to look for
that holy spirit." Hanger told BC
students the blues were born out of
misery, and through singing and playing
the blues, one can gain the strength of
spirit to get through tough times.
"The idea in the blues is pulse," he
said, "The blues is rooted in that pulse.
The pulse is everywhere; you just have
to pick up on it and ride it"
Two people Hanger used as
examples of finding that "pulse" were
jazz musician Louie Armstrong and
Tony Clarke-Sayer, founder of the
Asheville-Buncombe Community
Christian Ministry Shelter for the
homeless. After pointing out that most
people count on looks, fame or money
to be successful, he said, "Neither of
them were good looking. Both," he said,
"connected with the spirit."
Hanger concluded by, urging BC
students to,"Never let anyone tell you
that you do not have a gift."
