Palmer to direct Brevard College Concert Band on November 12 by Heather Derrington Clarion Staff Writer Dr. Robert Palmer presents the Brevard College Concert Band’s first concert of the year on Thursday, Nov. 12, at 8 p.m. The 37 - member band consists of a combination of woodwinds, brass, and percussion sections. Palmer promises that the concert will showcase a menagerie of concert band music and will be both an exciting and interesting program. “Basically, everyone has a part; each player has to be independent and highly professional in their approach to the music,” observed Palmer. One of the selections to be played is “Of Sailors and Whales” by Francis Macbeth. This particular selection contains five scenes from Melville’s Moby Dick that depicts either a scene or a character from the novel. “Esprit Decorps,” written by Robert Jagec for the U.S. Marine Band, will also be performed. One of Dr. Palmer’s pieces shall also be performed; it is based on the Southern folk hymn “Wondrous Love.” The piece is titled “Overture on a Southern Hymn.” Classical guitar ensemble to perform The Brevard College Classical Guitar Ensemble will perform a program of trios and solos on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 8 p.m. in Dunham Auditorium on the Brevard College campus. Editor The BC Drama Department’s Fall Production of “The Importance of Being Earnest,” by Oscar Wilde, opened on Oct. 30 to a full house. The show ran until Nov. 7 with one Sunday matinee and five evening performances. Director Sam Cope, assisted by Bob White, worked with the cast for eight weeks before the show opened. Rehearsals lasted for an average of three hours every weeknight. The cast of characters included Stephanie Edwards, Brooke Guthrie, Jonathan Mabry, John Runberg, Royce Sellers, David Sims, Ken Sitton, Liz Whipple, and Amy Wright. The first three performances occurred during Parent’s Weekend. Students, parents, and people from the community came to see the show. On opening night, the cast had to deal with technical difficulties involving clothing. Both Whipple’s and Wright’s skirts became undone when fellow cast members stepped on their trains. The two women held their skirts up until the end of those scenes. All of the other performances ran smoothly with no technical difficulties. Collegiate Singers team up with Brevard community by Heather Derrington Clarion Staff Writer On November 17, First United Methodist Church of Brevard will host the fall concert of the Brevard College Collegiate Singers, under the direction of Professor Mark Nabholz. “This will be an unusual program,” says Nabholz, “in fact it could be called ‘Collegiate Singers and Friends’ because it’s a community concert any way you look at it.” The central focus of the program is John Rudder’s popular Gloria, a 25- minute work in three movements. Accompanied by the Brevard College Brass Ensemble and percussionists, the 55-voice Collegiate Singers will be joined by thirty singers from the community. ‘We selected sixteen students from the Brevard High SchooPCfTior, and then invited another fifteen adults from Brevard to join us. Auditions were open to the public,” Nabholz explained. In addition, the massed choir will perform another Rutter anthem featuring the Brevard Boys Choir, and the Brevard College Chamber Chorale will perform selections from their upcoming series of Madrigal Dinners. Nabholz concludes, “I certainly hope the people of Brevard will take advantage of this opportunity of hear these chiors. They represent a true . cross-section of the choral life of our area” The concert begins at 8:00 and is free of charge. BC Chamber Chorale to present Madrigal Dinners Special To Clarion From BC Music Dept. On December 3,4 & 5, the Brevard College Chamber Chorale, under the direction of Professor Mark Nabholz, will present the fourth annual series of Christmas Madrigal Dinners. Held in the A. G. Meyers Cafeteria on the Brevard College campus, the dinners will begin at 7:30 p.m. each evening, featuring a banquet-style meal and an exciting program of holiday music. “While the format remains essentially similar from year to year, there are lots of changes to make it worth coming back to on an annual basis, “ says Nabholz. “Madrigal dinners are all about Christmas traditions that date back hundreds of years, but are still meaningful to our contemporary lives.” Among other changes, this year’s dinners will feature an expanded role to be played by the Brevard College Drama Department faculty, Sam Cope and Robert White. As usual, musical entertainment will be provided by the Brevard College Chamber Chorale, a 19- member ensemble, and the Brass Ensemble, directed by Ruth Still.
