by Jim Halyard
Clarion Staff Writer
Three new faculty members have
oined the staff of Brevard College in
time to begin the fall semester. They
nclude Sue Cilley, David Kirby and
avid Zuschin.
Sue Cilley joined Brevard College
s a faculty member in the Art
epartment. Cilley is no stranger to
Brevard, for she is a native of the town
'nd a graduate of the College back in
1971. From there she joined the Art
ducation program at Chapel Hill. She
ook some time off doing various
hings, including horse training.
Cilley returned to school at UNC -
sheville and is finishing her degree in
rt. She feels that upon returning to
revard, she would much rather be here
s a student, but she says that Brevard
resents her with a new challenging
xperience.
Cilley also says that this being her
first experience teaching, “I’m going
into this semester just crossing my
fingers and trying to be courageous
about the daunting task of talking to a
class for three hours. I know that Jo
Pumphrey will help me out when I need
it. If 1 don’t perform as a seasoned
teacher, which I’m sure I won’t, we
will, at least, get something out of it
together. I will encourage the students to
read and learn on their own.”
David Kirby joined the Music
Department in the instrumental
instruction program. He is a native of
Alabama, yet spent most of his life in
North Carolina. He is a graduate of
Appalachian State University and has a
Masters Degree from the College
Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati.
He has published some religious music
stemming from much of the work he
has done with church choirs.
On Kirby’s feelings about his first
impressions of the Brevard Music
Department, he says, “When you look
at the overall faculty here, they have

The Project Inside Out Service Fair
was held on Sept. 2, from 11 a.m. to
1:15 p.m., in the Rutherford Room in
the dining hall. Several organizations
from the community shared with the
interested students their volunteer
programs. They offer many different
services around this area and need

some of the most incredibly qualified
people in the department compared to
anywhere I have been. They have studied
with major scholars. In a way, I sort of
envy the students here because they get
to study with these great faculty
members, plus, the attention that they
get with the student/teacher ratio. It
would be hard to find any thing like that
in a larger school. That is probably the
reason that Brevard College students
have gone on to do so well.”
David Zuschin entered the Music
Department in the Vocal Department.
He is from Kent, Ohio, and graduated
with a degree in music education. From
there he went on to get a Masters
Degree at Yale University. In addition.
he graduated from the Institute of Sacred
Music at Yale. Zuschin has always been
interested in North Carolina and has
heard many good things about the
Brevard College Music Deparunent. “I
really enjoy teaching at the college level
and I’m very excited by the possibilities
presented. The potential is great!”
Zuschin said.

Freshmen Give First Impressions
by Melissa McIntosh
Clarion Staff Writer
First impressions are often known
as strong effects produced on the
intellect, feelings or conscience. For
instance, Brevard College has begun a
new year with different faces and new
names, and many of the mcommg
freshmen have already formed their own
strong opinions about Brevard College.
Freshman have brought with them
new ideas, quesuons and their concerned
thoughts about Brevard. Unfortunately
students will have their likes and
dislikes of this institution. For
example, Stacie Towne quotes The
atmosphere is incredibly beautiful, but
my social life needs more interest.
As for others, “Brevard s friendly
surroundings seem to comfort me, says
Ian Fairweather.

getting used to the college life and
new environment. However, in each of
our hearts we still miss home and the
luxury we all admit to once having.
Being an incoming freshman on any
campus around the world will be
difficult to get used to.
Matt Moore says, “Being away
from home has been rough, but college
is my time of independence.”
On the other hand, college freshmen
have finally figured out the meaning of
no sleep! When asked how her freshmen
life was treating her Holly Small
replied, “I am not sure, I am too tired.”

Vegas Night was held in the
Student Cafe on Saturday, September
18 The amount of students that attended
was incredible. There were games set up
such as. Black Jack, Poker, Pool, Pmg
pong and Bingo. Food was sold to the
Vegas players. They could buy it with
their casino bucks.
At the end of the evening an
auction was held. Several different items
were sold. The hottest seller seemed to
be the Brevard College boxer shorts.
Several students volunteered to help
Aurora Olivieri with this event. They
will receive PIO hours for doing so.
