The Clarion ^ Sonfemher 22. 1993 ew Faculty Members Join Brevard College by Jim Halyard Clarion Staff Writer Three new faculty members have oined the staff of Brevard College in time to begin the fall semester. They nclude Sue Cilley, David Kirby and avid Zuschin. Sue Cilley joined Brevard College s a faculty member in the Art epartment. Cilley is no stranger to Brevard, for she is a native of the town 'nd a graduate of the College back in 1971. From there she joined the Art ducation program at Chapel Hill. She ook some time off doing various hings, including horse training. Cilley returned to school at UNC - sheville and is finishing her degree in rt. She feels that upon returning to revard, she would much rather be here s a student, but she says that Brevard resents her with a new challenging xperience. Cilley also says that this being her first experience teaching, “I’m going into this semester just crossing my fingers and trying to be courageous about the daunting task of talking to a class for three hours. I know that Jo Pumphrey will help me out when I need it. If 1 don’t perform as a seasoned teacher, which I’m sure I won’t, we will, at least, get something out of it together. I will encourage the students to read and learn on their own.” David Kirby joined the Music Department in the instrumental instruction program. He is a native of Alabama, yet spent most of his life in North Carolina. He is a graduate of Appalachian State University and has a Masters Degree from the College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati. He has published some religious music stemming from much of the work he has done with church choirs. On Kirby’s feelings about his first impressions of the Brevard Music Department, he says, “When you look at the overall faculty here, they have PIO Service Fair Held Sept. 2 by Kelly Wright Campus Life Editor The Project Inside Out Service Fair was held on Sept. 2, from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., in the Rutherford Room in the dining hall. Several organizations from the community shared with the interested students their volunteer programs. They offer many different services around this area and need volunteers. Her office is located downstairs in the Coltrane Commons (Student Union). some of the most incredibly qualified people in the department compared to anywhere I have been. They have studied with major scholars. In a way, I sort of envy the students here because they get to study with these great faculty members, plus, the attention that they get with the student/teacher ratio. It would be hard to find any thing like that in a larger school. That is probably the reason that Brevard College students have gone on to do so well.” David Zuschin entered the Music Department in the Vocal Department. He is from Kent, Ohio, and graduated with a degree in music education. From there he went on to get a Masters Degree at Yale University. In addition. he graduated from the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale. Zuschin has always been interested in North Carolina and has heard many good things about the Brevard College Music Deparunent. “I really enjoy teaching at the college level and I’m very excited by the possibilities presented. Freshmen Give First Impressions by Melissa McIntosh Clarion Staff Writer First impressions are often known as strong effects produced on the intellect, feelings or conscience. For instance, Brevard College has begun a new year with different faces and new names, and many of the mcommg freshmen have already formed their own strong opinions about Brevard College. Freshman have brought with them new ideas, quesuons and their concerned thoughts about Brevard. Unfortunately students will have their likes and dislikes of this institution. For example, Stacie Towne quotes The atmosphere is incredibly beautiful, but my social life needs more interest. As for others, “Brevard s friendly surroundings seem to comfort me, says Ian Fairweather. As the days go by ^ getting used to the college life and new environment. However, in each of our hearts we still miss home and the luxury we all admit to once having. Being an incoming freshman on any campus around the world will be difficult to get used to. Matt Moore says, “Being away from home has been rough, but college is my time of independence.” On the other hand, college freshmen have finally figured out the meaning of no sleep! When asked how her freshmen life was treating her Holly Small replied, “I am not sure, I am too tired.” Firioht lights. Small Town Vegas Night Pays Off by Kelly Wright Campus Life Editor Vegas Night was held in the Student Cafe on Saturday, September 18 The amount of students that attended was incredible. There were games set up such as. Black Jack, Poker, Pool, Pmg pong and Bingo. Food was sold to the Vegas players. They could buy it with their casino bucks. At the end of the evening an auction was held. Several different items were sold. The hottest seller seemed to be the Brevard College boxer shorts. Several students volunteered to help Aurora Olivieri with this event. They will receive PIO hours for doing so.
