Thomas Bertrand installed as BC’s 10th president Brevard College installed its 10th president, J. Thomas Bertrand, during Spring Convocation ceremonies on Friday, Feb. 11. Bertrand took his oath of office from former president Dr. Cameron P. West, with Board of Trustees Chairman F. Crowder Falls witnessing. The ceremony was held despite an lee storm that struck Transylvania County the night before, causing power outages throughout campus. In fact, every building on campus was without power except for Boshamer Gymnasium, where the ceremony was held. “Our numbers are small, but we are a hardy crew,” Bertrand told the assembled audience as he welcomed the students, faculty, trustees and staff of Brevard College and guests including U.S. Congressman Charles Taylor, representatives from colleges and universities throughout the U.S., high- ranking officials from the United Methodist Church and Bertrand’s own friends and family. Bertrand urged those in attendance to take the College motto, “Learn so that you may serve,” to heart. It is through service to others, he noted, that the world will be saved from what some observers are calling a future of anarchy. Bertrand was welcomed to his new presidency by a host of dignitaries, including Bishop Bevel Jones III of the United Methodist Church, Congressman Taylor, Student Government Association President Paige Tarr, President of the Brevard College Alumni Association Robert Boggan, and Dr. BC President Tom Bertrand Clyde Carter to head Brevard Colleges new School of Wilderness Education « »-. This year’s Spring Convocation, which traditionally is the ceremony which opens the new semester, also celebrated the history of Brevard College. The exercise commemorated the 140th anniversary of the founding of Rutherford College, which merged with Weaver College in 1933 on the grounds of Brevard Institute. As part of the ceremony, several graduates of Weaver College received honorary Brevard College diplomas. Another ceremony honoring part of Brevard College’s past was held later in the day when the stone fence and gate at the front corner of campus was dedicated as a site on the National Register of Historic Places. This new program will be located in the duplex behind the gym. Within this duplex is a classroom downstairs and office space and equipment storage facilities upstairs. Moving into the duplex will enable the program to expand even further. With interest in the program thriving, students will learn and gain an understanding of self-confidence and hands-on life experiences. It also enables the students to learn how people affect the environment and how the environment affects them.
