Three BC baseball players to continue sports careers
Brevard College baseball players
Tim Brown, Brandon Hollier, and Steve
Sanders have all recently signed letters
of intent to continue their college
careers for the 1995-96 school year at
highly respected universities.
Pitcher Tim Brown signed his letter
of intent to play for UNC- Wilmington.
A graduate of South Point High School
in 1993, Tim finished his freshman
season at Brevard with a 7-4 record and
was twice voted as Region X pitcher of
the week. He was also second in the
region in strikeouts and pitched for
Brevard College in the Junior College
World Series last spring.
“Tim Brown is one of those players
you wish you could have on your team
forever. I will hate to see him go after
this upcoming season,” said Brevard
College baseball coach Rusty Stroupe.
“Not only has he been an outstanding
pitcher, he is also a leader who keeps
the team loose. Most impressive of all,
he posted a 3.5 Grade Point Average last
spring during baseball season. Without
his pitching performance against
Columbia St. (Tennessee) last year, we
would not have gone to the World
Series. UNC- Wilmington has a fine
baseball program and I expect Tim to be
one of their top pitchers in 1996 and 1
am certain he will continue to succeed
academically,” continued Stroupe.
Outfielder Brandon Hollier has
signed on with Furman University.
Brandon, originally from Marietta, GA,
graduated from Pope High School in
1992 where he made the 1992 All-State
Georgia Team and was an East-West All-
Lady Tornadoes soccer team
finishes second at Nationals
The Brevard College Lady
Tornadoes Soccer Team went to the
NJCAA Championships on November
17-20, in Baltimore, Md., ranked
number one in the nation and having
high hopes of returning as National
Champions. But their hopes fell short
as they lost the Championship Title
Game 5-0 to Champlain College
(Vermont).
The tournament results made the
Lady Tornadoes the second best team in
the nation - an honor well deserved by
these athletes who fought hard and
worked hard the entire season.
Brevard got to the title game by
defeating Mercer County Community
College 6-2 in their opening game of
the tournament. Sheila Best and Jennifer
Williams led the way with two goals
each. Dawn Haessig had a goal and two
assists and Sarah Milona added a goal
and an assist. Jennifer Bennett and Stacy
Kuhr each added an assist to round out
Brevard College’s scoring summary and
what appeared to be an easy victory.
‘We played well enough to win, that
was the important part. But we were no
where near the level we usually play at,”
stated head coach Joe Bartlinski.
With the win against Mercer, that
put Brevard up against the defending
national champions and tournament host
Essex Community College on Nov. 18.
It was the second meeting between the
two teams this season and in the end it
Was the second victory for Brevard
College in the tournament as they once
again defeated Essex 3-0 advancing BC
to the championship game against rival
Champlain. Jennifer Walsh, Jennifer
Hill, and Dawn Haessig each scored for
Brevard.
The next day was a very much
needed day of rest for the banged-up and
bruised Lady Tornadoes.
The Championship game against
Champlain on Sunday, Nov. 20, was
indeed a hard fought battle between the
nations two most talented teams. In the
end, it was Champlain proving itself
victorious.
Despite not finishing on top; the
Lady Tornadoes finished National
Champion Runner Up, with an overall
15-4 record. That is by far the best
performance of any womens soccer team
in BC history. Finishing the year
ranked second is also nothing to be
ashamed of when you stop and think of
just how many junior colleges there are
in the entire country. According to
Bartlinski, by the time the women’s
soccer team got to the final game they
were played out. The combination of
having only twelve players and the
Tornadoes’ aggressive style of play left
the team without a lot of steam for the
final game. “Our team only knows one
style of play,” said Bartlinski, “and that
is all out, all the time.”
Congratulations Lady Tornadoes,
you not only made the school proud,
you made yourselves proud, and you
earned the respect of many where respect
was long overdue.
Star. He was also a member of the
1992 Metro Atlanta Dugout Club where
he was player of the week twice. Last
season at Brevard he hit .372 and
provided solid defense in the field.
Brandon is also a member of the Phi
Theta Kappa honors academic club here
on campus. According to Coach
Stroupe, “Brandon is a fine young man
who has proven himself academically
and athletically at Brevard. He is a
perfect match for Furman because of his
character, dedication to academics, and
athletic excellence.”
Steve Sanders signed his letter of
intent with N.C. State University. An
All-State pitcher at Cherry ville Sr. High
(Cherryville, NC) in 1993, Sanders
finished his Freshman year at Brevard
with a 10-0 regular season record (12-2
overall) and was a National Junior
College Athletic Association All-
American. He was a First Team All-
Region 10 member and pitched in the
Junior College World Series. “I
couldn’t be more exited that Stevie has
decided to continue his college education
and his athletic career at N.C. State,”
said Stroupe. “I am tremendously proud
of what he accomplished last year and
am looking forward to his upcoming
sophomore season at Brevard this year.
Stevie has matured academically,
athletically, and emotionally while at
Brevard. There may have been those
who doubted whether Stevie would
make it in college. He has proven those
doubters wrong. I have no doubt that he
will continue to make great strides both
on and off the field.”
