Music Department To Host Clarinet Day

Brevard, N.C.- The Brevard College
Music Department will host Clarinet
Day, featuring workshops, master
classes, recitals and rehearsals, on the
Brevard College campus on Saturday, .
November 11, from 9:30 a.m. until 7:30
p.m.
The program will culminate with a
concert at 7:30 by guest artist and
clinician Ronald de Kant of the University
Cherokee Author
Will Speak At BC
BREVARD, N.C.- Brevard
College’s Poets and Writers Series will
host Cherokee author Marijo Moore for a
reading and discussion of her works and
Indian spirituality on Thursday, Nov. 2,
at 7:30 p.m. in Room 118 of the
McLarty-Goodson Classroom Building.
The program is free of charge and open
to the public.
Moore, of Cherokee descent, grew up
in the small western Tennessee town of
Crockett-Mills, later moved to Nashville,
and attended Teimessee State University.
While there, she authored her own
chapbook of poetry (titled “Claritj' of
Purpose”)and coauthored (with Benjamin
Cummings, an Oglala Sioux from the
Pine Ridge Reservation of South Dakota)
a non-fiction book, “Beside a Singing
Star-The Last Four Years With Willie
Nelson Jr.”
While living in England in 1991,
Moore was directed by her dreams to
move to Western North Carolina and
begin researching her Cherokee roots.
Her latest book is “Returning to the
Homeland-Cherokee Poetry and Short
StorleSi” Moore now resides in
Asheville, where she is working on a
forthcoming book of poetry, “Spirit
Voices of Bones,” gathering material for
a novel on American Indian Women and
teaching workshops on American Indian
spirituality and writing.
Moore serves on the board of the
North Carolina Writer’s Network and is
a member of the North Carolina Writer’s
Conference. She is also a freelance
"Titer for “News From Indian Country,”
“The Cherokee One Feather,”
and Indian Artist Magazine. ”
The next program in the Poets and
Writers at Brevard series, to be held in
the Spring, will feature Joseph Bathanti,
author of poetry, drama, fiction and non-
fiction. All Poets and Writers at Brevard
programs are free of charge and open to
the public.

on the day of the program.
Ronald de Kant, a Juilliard graduate,
joined the University of Cincinnati
College Conservatory of Music in 1987
as Professor of Clarinet and Chamber
music, and he also serves as Chairman of
the Department of Woodwinds and Brass.
His performing career as a principal
clarinet includes the New Orleans
Philharmonic, the Vancouver symphony,
the CBC Vancouver Chamber Orchestra,
and the Santa Fe Opera.
De Kant has also performed with the
Cincinnati Orchestra and has toured
extensively as a recitalist, clinician and
artist-in-residence, including two solo
tours of Australia and a residency at the
Shanghai Conservatory in 1994. His solo
recordings include the Mozart Clarinet
Ensemble Presents Fall Concert
Brevard, N.C.- The Brevard College
Jazz Ensemble and Symphonic Winds,
under the direction of Dr. David Kirby,
will present their Fall Concert on
Tuesday, November 14, at 8 p.m. In
Brevard College’s Dunham Auditorium.
The program if free of charge and open
to the public.
The Symphonic Winds will present a
program featuring transcriptions of
orchestral works, including the overture
to “:a Forza del Destino” by Verdi and
“Mars” from “The Planets” by Gustav
Holst. Other works will include Claude
Smith’s “Eternal Father, Strong to Save,”
a work based on the Navy hymn and
composed for the United States Navy
Band. Vaughan Williams’ chorale
prelude “Rhosymedre” and Warren
Benson’s “Transylvania Fanfare”
(composed for the Brevard Music Center)
will also be performed.
The Brevard College Jazz Ensemble
will conclude the program with a
selection of standards. and new
compositions including “April in Paris,”
“I Get Along Without You Very Well,”
“Not Really The Blues,”
“Woodchopper’s Ball” “Witchcraft.”
The trumpet section will also be featured
in “Brass Machine.”
Quintet with the Parcel Quartet and the
Copeland Clarinet Concerto ( conducted
by the compose).
In 1992, de Kant hosted the
International Clarinet Conference at the
University of Cinciimati College-
Conservatory of Music, and in 1993 he
participated in the inaugural season of the
Utah Chamber Music Festival where he
performs each summer.
New Holiday
Market Will
Be Held
There is a new holiday tradition
at Brevard College, “The Holiday
Market”. The market will be held on
Monday, December 4 and Tuesday,
December 5 between 11:00a.m. and
8:00 p.m. in Coltrane Commons.
Holiday music and entertaiimient will be
presented by students and faculty on
campus and from the local schools and
churches.
The Holiday Market is open to
Transylvania County and City of Brevard
Downtown Businesses, Artisans and
Crafters, Outdoor Outfitters, shops,
baked good vendors, and unique
merchandise retailers.
Twister Productions will decide
on selections for holiday booths ( to
avoid duplicate booths, merchandise,
etc.) The Deadline for vendor
applications will be Friday, November
10, at 5:00 pm. There will be vendor
space for approximentally 30 to 35 booths
that will be 8'x9'. Vendors will be
limited to one booth unless all booths are
not sold . One room will be set aside for
toys , playthings and outdoor equipment
merchants. The vendor booth fee will be
$30 ($5 extra for electricity ) for the two
day Market.
The Holiday marketplace is for
the entire Community. This event is part
of the Christmas and Holiday Traditions
being developed by Brevard College for
the entire community. The Campus
population of over 800 students, faculty,
and staff members, will make -up part of
the Holiday shopping crowd, along with
the rest of the Community.
