Robinson’s Bar-B-Q has been open now for nearly a month on a “Cash Only” basis. At Robinson’s, a wide variety of home-made food is served. Last year the Student Union was open to students so that they could use their meal cards to purchase meals. In answer to a petition recently circulated in the dorms concerning a meal card scanner, the Administration replied that there might be one “sometime in the future”. Senator Dole Shoots For Oval Office Jon Ostendorff Editor Senate majority leader Republican Bob Dole is once again, running for the presidential office. The last time he ran was in 1988. His defeat by George Bush in the New Hampshire primaries put him out of the race completely. Now, in 1996, the Senator from Kansas has a 35% majority placing him first over Colin Powell’s 20% vote. Dole attended the University of Kansas, 1941-1943 and Wasbum University of Topeka, in 19.52. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1948 and was wounded in Italy in 1944. Dole’s political career started in the Kansas House, 1951-53. He was Russell County attorney from 1953 to 1961. From 1961 to 1969 he served in the U.S. House and has served in the U.S. Senate since 1968. Dole was the Republican nominee for vice president in 1976. He also sought Republican nomination for president in 1980 and 1988. Senator Dole at 71 years old is certainly an experienced leader, and he has also developed the essential skills of pushing bills in the Senate. However, he has not shown the charismatic articulation or national vision that may be necessary to win votes. Dole, unlike some of the GOP members, is a small town Republican who believes in fiscal conservation. “He personifies what the voters in 1994 rejected”, says Lyn Shaw, executive director of the Kansas Democratic Party. “Dole is absolutely the insiders’ insider.” Dole’s platform includes slashing business regulations to increase economic growth and requiring a 3/5 majority vote in congress for future tax increases. He also plans to scrap the federal tax system and instate a flat tax rate that is theorized to be efficient. The New Hampshire primaries have, in the past, accurately predicted the GOP presidential candidate. With the majority Bob Dole holds, he may have a shot at the Oval Office this time around.
