Page 8 Tuesday April 30,1996 Track Team Triumphs Again Brevard’s &iest track athletes set fire again as they employed victory at the Wake Forest Easter Classic. Starting the season with a bang is how most athletes like to approach the season. Coach Dave Rinker’s Tornados did just that. This meet was held on April 6, at Wake Forest University. This meet marked Brevard’s third outdoor meet and set the stage for the next track event. Breaking away is what Will Hodges did as he took victory in the Men’s 800 meter run. Will portrayed a sleeping giant as he hid in the back of the pack and waited for the right move to fire upon the helpless victims. Will took the lead with 50 meters to go and held on to win this Collegiate event. Will exclaims, “It feels good to win. I think I’ll do it more often. ” Next in the Men’s 1500 meter John McMillian edged out a runner from U.N.C. Asheville. This race was very intense and came down to the wire; however, John held on as the victor. John also hid like a vulmre and waited to take his prey. Again another victory resulted as the Men’s 4x 400 Relay team took charge. This team consisted of Josh Mitchell, Sherod Segars, John McMillian, and Tommy Lancaster. This relay team really demanded victory. The only team in contention was Wake Forest; however, they couldn’t match mighty Brevard. Next in the Men’s 4x 100 Relay Josh Mitchell, Sherod Segars, Marcus Lester, and Allen Parker took charge and edged out Campbell College. The race was close, but the relying strength of our giants kept the lead and brought Brevard another victory. 3000 meters of pain is what three Brevard runners went through to take first, second, and third in a grueling steeplechase. Joe Gibson was on top of things to win the race and set a personal record. Second was Tommy Lancaster and third was Carmen Mastrando. Being the third meet of the outdoor season Brevard came away with five wins and numerous seconds and thirds. Golf Team Travels To Tournament Matthew Dalton. Sports Writer Not only has bad weather interfered with many events, it has been a burden for the top ranked Brevard golf team. They have played in fireezing cold weather as well as cold, rainy weather all season. However, the team hopes that they can make it to Alabama where they hope to have warmer weather. If they win in Alabama, the team will go to nationals in Scotsdale, Arizona. The golf team consists of Craig Brown, Pat Herson, Billy Eads, Chad Drew, and their top player, Alex Compagnoli. The team has played only division I teams so far. They have done very well against these teams. Their top player, Alex Compagnoli, has won one match and come in second in two other matches. We wish the team and their coach, Scott Yager, the best of luck. Volleyball Added to B.C.’s Sports Roster Tim Strong Sports Writer A new sport will start up next year at Brevard College. Women’s volleyball will make its debut in the fall of 1996. Some of the girls here on campus that will be participating in this sport include Claudia Argiro, Amanda Jacob, Kenya Davis, Karen Chancellor, and Angela Wright. These girls are really looking forward to getting started with what looks to be a promising season next fall. Baseball Team Finishes Winning Season With a Bang Matthew Dalton Sports Writer Tournament time is here for the Brevard baseball team and their hopes of making it back to College World Series. The team has had a dream season so far, by first setting a new school record of 19 consecutive wins and being ranked 4th in the nation. They ended their regular season with a double header here at Brevard on Wednesday, April 24, against Spartenburg. The baseball team will head to East Carolina University on May 7 through May 12. They hope to win there and go to the district tournament in Tennessee. Best of luck guys. As of now, Jill Perry, recruiter for the volleyball team, is still fmding players to fill the remaining spots that are left. As far as practicing is concerned, the volleyball team will not hold any practices until the beginning of next fall. We want to wish the team well in their upcoming season. m Brevard’s baseball team scores everytime they go to bat. (Photo by Kris Caswell)
