1st YEAR TEAM EXCELS!
The Brevard College Lady
Tornados’ Volleyball team is number 1
in the region! This first year team of
athletes is undefeated against junior
colleges for their regular season. Now
the volleyball team needs to use their
talent to take them as far as they can go
in the post season.
This team’s success is due to the
eight players who have worked together
to establish volleyball here at Brevard
College. These players are Claudia
Argiro, Karen Chancellor, Amanda
Jacobs, Julie Pickhardt, Blakeley Jones,
Kimberly Morris, Karamie Hartman,
and Ginger Palmer. Their
accomplishments are also due to their
excellent coaching by Tadd Connor and
Dr. Tom Tait.
On November 9, the Lady Tornados
traveled to Spartanburg Methodist
College for the Regional XVII
Tournament. This inaugural team not
only brought home their first Regional
title ever, but many other awards were
given as well. Tadd Connor was named
the Region X Coach of the Year.
Blakeley Jones was named the Region X
Player of the Year. Three other Brevard

. LADY TORNADOS
RALLY TO WIN, 76-73
The Brevard College Lady
Tornado’s basketball team rallied from
their season opening loss to Truett-
McCormell to defeat the Reinhardt
Eagles in the consolation game of the
Domino’s Tip-Off Classic held at
Boshamer Gym the weekend of
November 2-3.
Following the loss on Friday to
Truett McCoimell, the Lady Tornados
were looking to get on track Saturday
afternoon. The game was close early as
the score remained tied until 13:10 to
play in the first half. That’s when
Reinhardt’s J. Crow ignited an Eagles’
run with a three pointer. It proved to be
the spark that the Eagles needed as they
went on a 15-2 run that carried the
visiting team to a 37-22 halftime lead.
Instead of resting at half-time,
Brevard Coach Tadd Connor kept his
team on the floor to scrimmage each
other and to work on the thiigs that they
had failed to properly execute in the first
half. Connor said, “ I thought we had
gotten away from running our plays and
understanding what it was I expected
from my team. I had talked about it at
halftime Friday night and didn’t think we
had a big change. So, Saturday during
halftime I thought I’d show them what it
was I wanted. By leaving them on the
floor, it allowed them to play against
each other and get a littie upset. I
thought this would help their intensity!
This proved to be just the thing
that the team needed because at the start
of the second half. Forward Leigh Ann
Johnson hit a three pointer and was
fouled. She made her free throw to cut
the lead to 51-38. This helped the rest of
the team get into the flow and Brevard
went on a 16-4 run capped off by a thee
point shot by guard Cindy Koone which
pulled BC within two, 55-53 with 8:08
to go.
Cindy Koone kept the run goiqg
by stealing the ball twice and converting
to turn-overs into 4 points. The Lady
Tornados finally took the lead when
center Lawanda McDowell made two
free throws with 3:35 to play. This
marked the first time the Tornados had
lead since early in the game.
Reinhardt refused to go away.
With 1:32 to go, B. Scott hit two free
throws to tie the game at 67. This
proved to be all for nothing as Cindy
Koone iced the game for the Tornados
by hitting two free throws and
preserving the amazing comeback 76-73.
players were chosen to be part of the
All-Region team. They are Blakeley
Jones, Julie Pickhardt, and Karen
Chancellor. The All-Tournament team
was also selected and those chosen
include Blakeley Jones, Julie Pickhardt,
and Amanda Jacobs.
Brevard College will now host the
District Tournament on November 16.
The Lady Tornados’ Volleyball team
will play Middle Georgia for the chance
to go to the Junior College Nationals.
This National Tournament will be held at
Miami-Dade Community College in
Miami, Florida, on November 25-27.
