SGA addresses student concerns
Sarah Rogers
Campus Life Editor
The following is a list of student
suggestions and solutions from SGA.
Suggestion: We really need later
visitation due to study reasons if nothing
else. Some students here act very
immature, but we are not all immature
people. However, we should be given
the chance to be responsible and should
be allowed the right to be adults and see
other adults in their dorms or our own at
a later time than our present curfew.
Solution: The Brevard College
Visitation dilemma is a very heated
debate that has been discussed
thoroughly at past Student Goveriunent
meetings. A petition brought forth by
Kristen Cherry has opened up the idea of
an extended visitation policy. However,
it will involve a little give and take on
both the parts of the resident staff and
students. If visitation is extended, then
students will have to donate a little of
their time to staff the lobbies in order to
monitor who comes into the dorms.
Although this might not seein appealing,
it is necessary to have full cooperation
on the parts of each student for this to
work. If the attempt is unsuccessful, the
visitation policy will never change from
how it is now. At this point, nothing is
set in stone. A proposal must first be
submitted and okayed. More information
will be available as soon as it comes.
Suggestion: Commuters need to be
able to park in commuter parking lots
that are presently not marked as such.
Solution: Steve Martin has already
been informed of this problem. He as
well as the Student Govenmient
apologizes profusely for any
inconveniences that this may have
caused. Unfortunately, the commuter
parking lots are not properly marked.
Not only is this a huge inconvenience for
commuters .that need a place to park
during the day, but it is also a problem
for residents who park in the lots not
realizing that they are restricted and flien
receive parking violations. Matt Austin
has submitted a proposal that has been
approved to purchase parking signs that
will clearly label which parkmg lots are
for whom. As soon as the signs arrive,
they will be appropriately placed around
that college campus.
Suggestion: Please do not change
our niailboxes around and not tell us.
Solution: It is important to recognize
that the mail room staff is not at fauU for
the confusion surrounding student
mailboxes earlier this year. Many
sophomores that decided to return to the
College late in the summer did not
realize that their post office boxes had
already been reassigned. The mail room
staff did all that they could to see that
every student had an appropriate mailbox
as soon as possible.
Suggestion: The female community
bathrooms desperately need metal
containers for female items in order to
reduce litter on the bathroom floors.
Solution: Heidi Rodenbaugh has
discussed this problem with the Student
Government and, hopefully, sanitary
containers will be placed in the female
community baths soon.
Suggestion: We would like to have
free pizza from Pizza Hut or Little
Ceasars for a party.
Solution: It just so happens that
there are a variety of socials where
refreshments, even pizza, are served on
a regular basis all over the college
campus. Anyone is more than welcome
to the food as long as you attend the
social event. In addition to these planned
social events, there are sufficient funds
set aside for hall socials once a month.
Perhaps you would like to suggest a
pizza party and movie night for your
hall. Our tuition covers three meals a
day in the school cafeteria and, beyond
that, Brevard College has no
responsibility to provide late night
snacks for people who just like pizza.

Suggestion: Please distinguish whidi
halls are smoking and which halls are
non-smoking so that smokers won’t
smoke on non-smoking halls.
Solution: Most halls in all dorms are
clearly labeled as smoking or non
smoking. However, it is a growing
problem that smokers are smoking on
non-smoking halls. If you notice that the
hall on which you live is not clearly
labeled, then alert your P.A. so that
perhaps a black and orange smoking or
non-smoking sign can be purchased and
visibly placed on your hall.
If you have any suggestions you
would like to submit to SGA for
consideration, please contact Sarah
Rogers.
PIO hours: Are you
working on them?

Campus Life Editor
Just a reminder that, at this time,
every Brevard College student must
complete thirty hours of community or
on campus service before graduation.
If you are graduating in December
1996 or May 1997 and have not
completed your service requirements,
then it is advisable that you see Linda
Helms at the Center for Service
Learning m the lower portion of
Coltrane Commons or call her at 884-
8275.
As a note, all hours completed over
the summer or during this fall will be
recorded by the Thanksgiving holiday if
the hours have been turned in.
Everyone is encouraged to
participate in any community service
opportunities in their hometown over the
holidays. As long as the hours are
documented, credit will be given.
