^ Friday, December 13,1996 Opinion Brevard College: Love it or leave it Sarah Rogers Campus Life Editor Maybe I am just one of those people in life that is easily entertained, but I love Brevard College. When I visited this school during November of my senior year, I knew that this is where I wanted to spend at least two of my college years. Ever since I arrived here in August of 1995, I have had a nice time. I do not need a big city or booming nightlife to have fun. I like the fact that our classes are small and that we have the chance to know everyone else on campus. I think the mountains are beautiful and the seclusion is rather quaint. I don’t mind that the only place worth eating is El Chapala or that the only place to hang out past 10 o’ clock on the week nights is the Huddle House. So, I ask myself, “Could life get any better”? Probably, it could. Maybe one day I will be at a school that I enjoy even more. But for now I am at Brevard College and I intend to make the best of it. However, I do realize that we suffer from some minor disadvantages. One has to haul all the way to Asheville to fmd a decent mall and occasionally the food is sickening. However, in the grand scheme of things, it is hardly a crisis. So what really irks me is people that constantly badmouth Brevard College. I can understand some occasional complaints, but people who obsess over how miserable the college is are just making it hard for themselves. Complaining is the most ignorant way to try to change something because it accomplishes nothing. If someone has a problem with something, then the intelligent thing to do is inform the student goverrmient. Kristin Cherry is an excellent example of this. She didn’t like the visitation rule here so, instead of complaining, she circulated a petition, to have visitation extended and presented it to SGA. Everyone in SGA agreed with her, and so we submitted a proposal for the extension of visitation hours. All of the rules here are not set in stone. Believe it or not, things here can be changed. Hopefully, her efforts will be rewarded. But if you don’t want to try to make things better and you would rather just complain about how miserable you are, why don’t you just go home? No one makes you stay here. Brevard College is not a prison. Transfer somewhere else or just drop out. It is not that uncommon. For example, my best friend from home decided that school was not for her. So, she lives in an apartment with four strange cats and sells water filters. Doesn’t the real world sound fun? ^‘Complaining is the most ignorant way to try to change something because it accomplishes nothing. ” lov j(8^ Believe it or not, there are stricter schools than Brevard . At Montreat Anderson, when someone of the opposite sex is in your room, the door must be open and all feet must be on the floor. At Campbell University, there is no visitation. So you see, my father is right after all. As he always says, “Sarah, things could be much worse”. And yes, they most certainly could be worse. Being loud and obnoxious could become uncool. There could be a sudden disappearance of all alcohol in Transylvania County. The street value of pot could skyrocket. Or even worse, not showering and dressing like peaced- out slobs from the 70's could go out of style. Geez, what would some of you do then? Oh, the horror of it all! The point is; Quit Whining! When you complain you look bad because- hello-you are the one that goes to school here. It is like saying to people that you aren’t intelligent enough to get into a school you like more. So, I think that everyone that dislikes Brevard College should be quiet or go home. By eliminating all of the overly negative people from our college campus, our college would inevitably be a much happier place. I’ll even do my part to ensure a more positive campus. Let me know if you hate it here, and I’ll help you pack. Are we getting what we pay for? Scott Wolfe Sports Editor When most of us started looking into colleges, there were factors to consider; Does it have my major? What’s the ratio of girls and guys, athletics, etc., etc...then we looked at how much the college was going to cost. It is usually something to consider, especially if you are going to have to fork out tuition and other expenses. When you saw how much Brevard College cost, you probably came to two conclusions... “This must be a nice facility if it costs so much”, and “I bet the school is probably real small”. Others were able to blow a sigh of relief when notified that they would be attending on some sort of scholarship. This way, tuition would only be costing them around the same price of a normal school before the financial aid! Well, we are here now, and I’m sure that many of you are asking the question that is asked by most students after their first month or so of attending Brevard... “Where does the money go?” We look around this campus and we see things like old dormitories with pipes ruiHiing across Ibe ceiling. iie3lers. that hardly blow enough heat to keep the roaches warm. One student who lives in Jones told me that the only way she knows her heater is working is when she smells a dead rodent cooking when she walks through her door. Our illustrious cafeteria is famous for serving food on a three day cycle...I mean, hey, how often do you get a chance to be served something later on in the week if you somehow miss it on Monday or Tuesday? Well, you get that here at Brevard. Wow, for $13,080 a year we should at least get central heating and air, or hot water that doesn’t mysteriously disappear with the flushmg of the toilet. This is only true, of 5BF" “...the only way she knows her heater is working is when she smells a dead rodent cooking... ” jPS^ course, if you have your own shower and don’t have to share one with the 30 other members of your hall.. .(Guess that tattoo isn’t a secret anymore!) Maybe you were led into the^ misconception that your books were free...well, wrong again! In addition to the tuition, we have to shell out roughly $600 yearly to pay for books so that we can be educated! This is a deal! How many people can you name who are not here now that were students at the beginning of the semester? How many people do you know that will not be coming back? Wait!! Don’t go, I have some good things to point out! Hey, we get to go to dances put on by Twister Productions! Those neat dances usually have the same lame DJ and same stale cafeteria cookies we get with our take out lunches...Oh ya, and what is the flavor of that punch? Yuck! Each event is, in the least, predictable. We do get free access to the Internet and e- mail...Like that is easy to use...There are around 20 computers for the 700 students who are enrolled at this school, no problem using that smff! So ,I’m thinking, maybe we can get that in our rooms right? “We want to have that in place by 1998" 1998!! Call me selfish but I want it now! I am sure many students can tell lots of stories about other schools and what they have and what we do not, and we foam at the mouth with jealousy at their fortune...but hey, we are at Brevard College, land of waterfalls, etc! Most students probably took a visit to this college and had the opportunity to see just what they were getting into. However, I would like to see our dollars put into more places that the students can see the benefits... Why not try to get the Internet put into each room now! Most smdents would be willing to pay if it were available. If you cannot do these, have people available to answer these questions of why or why not. I also believe that smdents should have more of a say in what happens here on campus. The SGA meetings are designed to help us, but they sound more like Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield! All that’s accomplished is a lot of whining and fighting. I would also like to know why the school is preventing us from getting what we want. I want answers, I would like them soon. It would be nice if the answers were clear and concise and did not dodge the subject like the MANDATORY assembly we had in October. .We pay the salaries of our teachers and administrators. If they are not here to work for us, we need to stop working for them.
