“...lift up mine eyes unto the
hills...” (Psalm 12: 1-2) is exactly what
a person will do as he/she enters the
chapel ai Pretty Place. It is truly a
breathtaking and spiritual experience,
not to be forgotten.
Pretty Place is located in South
Carolina, on property managed by
Camp Greenville, a YMCA youth camp.
It is opened for spiritual awakenings
throughout the year. From Brevard, take
276 South to Solomon Jones Road. This
will be on your left. There is a sign for
Camp Greenville, as well as signs
marking the Eastern Continental Divide,
and others. Follow that road until it ends
at Pretty Place.
The chapel was a gift to Camp
Greenville by Mr. Fred W. Symmes.
The building is not of any great
architectural significance, but the
placement is. The chapel is located on a
sheer cliff, but until you enter the
arched doorway leading into the chapel,
off the parking lot, one would never
know just how magnificent the views
are. The chapel is like a pavilion,
without walls. The descending pews
reach a cross, that is overshadowed by
the greatness of the mountains and
valleys viewed. There can be but one
who could have created such splendor,
and you will be introduced to that
creator as you stand m nis/ner presence,
looking out over the vast and quite
beautiful landscape. There is nothing in
this world that can prepare you for what
your experience will be, on your first
visit.
Although each person has separate
conceptions of what a spiritual
awakening is, a visit to Pretty Place will
convince even the hardest critics that
there is a power greater than they that
was involved in the creation and is
involved in the maintenance of this Icon
of wonder.
Because of the immense beauty and
the facility offered, many weddings take
place at the chapel, on a yearly basis. It
is advised that a call to Camp Greenville
be made before a trip is planned. If
there is a wedding, they close Pretty
Place to the public. The phone number
to call is: (861) 836-3291.
