Boerner named Dean of Admissions

Brevard College has named
Barbara Boemer to the position of Vice
President and Dean for admission and
Financial Aid. Boemer, a native of
Winston-Salem and veteran in the field
of women’s education, holds a B.A.
degree from UNC- Greensboro, an
M.Ed. In psychology and philosophy
from The American University, and a
M.B.A. in management theory from
Loyola College of Baltimore. In
addition, Boemer has pursued exten
sive doctoral studies in educational
administration at the American Uni
versity.
Boemer has actually been
working with Brevard College on a
part-time basis since January, serving
as special assistant to the president for
enrollment management and as a
member of the senior staff. “Barbara
has impressed the faculty and staff
alike with her incisive analysis and the
strategies she has developed for
meeting any challenge,” said Brevard
College President J. Thomas Bertrand.
“I am delighted to be able to announce
her acceptance of this position.”
Boemer began her remark
able career in education as a biology
and chemistry teacher, and head of the

Madeira School for Girls in McLean,
Virginia, where she served variously
as teacher of biology, chemistry and

Altmuster during the Spring semester. SUidents will take a full semester's
load. GER 101 and 102, HUM 203, and MUS 209. Also, students may elect
to register for PE 139C. The cost of semester is $8,500.00, which includes
Uiition, room and board, all program-related excursions, and round-trip
airfaie. All scholarship and loan money can be applied toward the semester
in Austria. Interested students need to contact Dr. Laurie McDowell in
Dunham 106. Deadline for applications is November 1.

tion, Boerner
was the first
woman to be
elected president
of the Second
ary School Ad
missions Test
Board and has held high office in other
national professsional associations,
including the National Association of
Independent Schools, the College
Entrance Examination Board, the
National Association of College Ad
missions Counselors, the Headmis
tress Association of the East (presi
dent), the National Association of
Principals of Schools of Girls, and the
Girls Schools Coalition. She has
headed accreditation evaluation teams
at schools throughout New England,
and her communtiy service includes
long commitments to the Girl Scouts,
the Junior Achievement and the Urban
League, various hospital boards of
directors and the boad of tmstees of
Lawrence University.

an atmosphere which encourages its
people to be concerned about the
welfare of individual and the group.
Within this setting, there is an
additional aspect which is unique;
Brevard College is undergoing monu
mental and creative change, something
which I find stimulating and exciting.
The challenge for the college is to find,
attract and retam students who also
find change stimulating and who have
the energy to thrive in a small
institution.”
New Faces in the Crowd

The weekend of September 26-28 is Parent’s Weekend at Brevard, a
time for parents to visit the College to attend classes, meet the faculty and ad
ministration, eat in the dining hall, and enjoy student activities with their son or
daughter. On Friday, parents can attend classes and discuss with the faculty the
nature and philosophy of the education their child is getting at Brevard. Satur
day morning will provide parents with the opportunity to discuss with Profes
sors the performance and potential of their son or daughter in each course The
first 4-week grade report will come out adjacent to Family Weekend to provide
a fum ground for speculation. Instructors are required (where possible) to have
a minimum of one major grade in their course by this point in the semester.
During the weekend, campus recreational facilities will be open for
use, the J.A. Jones Library will be open during regular hours (10am-5pm
Sat.;3pm-llpm, Sun.). The Pisqah National Forest offers picnic areas, hiking’
amazing waterfalls, and beautiful camping spots to take your parents to. Addi
tional mformation (e.g. Restaurant guides, etc.) will be available at registration
on Saturday morning.

Along with all the new
students on campus this fall, Brevard
also has a few new faces among the
faculty. One of these new faces is Dr.
Robert Towell. The newset addition to
Psychology department. Dr. Towell
earned his B.A. at Clemson, his
masters at Furman, and finished his
doctorate at the University of Georgia.
Before coming to Brevard, Dr. Towell
taught at Clemson and Limestone
College. Along with his education in
Psychology, he also eamed a masters
degree in Divinity from Southeastern
Baptist Theological Seminary.
Another new professor on
campus is Dr. Kenneth Duke who is the
new assistant professor of Environ
mental Studies and Ecology. After
attending Duke University, Dr. Duke
finished his doctorate at the University
of Georgia. He has joined the Brevard
College faculty to teach Environmen-
,tal Sfcdies. The Forest 2nd The River,
and Senior Project.
Along with Dr. Towell and
Dr. Duke, other new faculty members
include: in the Music department, Jon
Gudmunson, Jeremy Sheehan, and
Don Waher; in the Math department,
Martha Curto, Ruth Daniel, and Fred
Granros; in the English department,
Ralph Hamlett, Carol Vance and Linda
Gardner; in the Experiential Science
department. Dr. Mark Wagstaff and
Jessie Wei, and in the Psychology
department, Kevin Morgan.
The Clarion would like to
welcome all the new professors and
instmctors to Brevard College.
