Home Sweet Home: Homecoming Reunion
by Mandi Milligan
Homecoming. Seeing old
friends, watching Brevard College’s Soc
cer, spectacular skydivers, the bump and
grind of the music at the dance, the folk
like sound of Beth Wood, the stunning
homecoming court, and of course the
unspoken, occasional party or two.
Homecoming weekend is a time for ev
eryone to let loose and have fun. That’s
what happened this past weekend here
at Brevard College.
The weekend began with a great
start on Friday at the Beth Wood con
cert. I had the opportunity to sit down
with Beth and ask her a few questions
and when asked how she felt to be back
at Brevard for homecoming she said “I
feel honored. It is nice to be asked to
play- it feels great.” After the concert
the homecoming dance in Coltrane Com
mons got everyone feelin’ the bass with
Vic Thomas spinning. There were a lot
of people in attendance and everyone
seemed like they were having fun. Also
on Friday there was a Brevard Alumni
sports banquet where several national
teams from years back were honored. On
Saturday four soccer games which in
cluded 2 alumni games. The Brevard
Women’s Soccer Team played at 1 pm
followed by the Brevard Men’s Soccer
Teamat3:30pm. The women played 3"*
ranked Monroe and won 9-0 and the men
played Rockingham C.C. and won an
embarrassing 13-0 with the teams sided
n on 8. In between those two games 4
skydivers dotted the sky and dropped at
mid court for all to see. Following that
awesome display of skill was the presen
tation of the homecoming court. The
court consisted of nominees for queen
Vemee White, Megan Ashley, Leisha
Weeks, Amber Jefferies, Karen Craig,
Megan Grose Tracy Phelps and for king
Durbin Davis, Eddie McKenzie, Brian
Barbour, Johnny Mynhier, Tyler Sutterby,
Nate Ballinger. Also the nominees for
prince and princess were Alyssa Miley,
Morgen Magee, Kim Morgan, Kerri cessful. Congratulations to all who
Pickelsimer, Liah W^ade, Melissa Case, Scott made it possible!

Brevard College Alumni return
ing to campus was a beginning step for
many growing individually, emotionally,
academically, and spiritually. Alumni re
turn with the expectations of seeing old
friends, professors, old flames, and even
their old dorm rooms. I spoke to several
alumni and they all said that Brevard has
changed tremendously. A couple of them
said that the night life drastically differed
considering they could not find anywhere
to hang out. Beth Wood said that Brevard
College is a beautiful place- I’ve never seen
anyplace like it.” On a lighter note, when
Beth went here our hour system was then
called the point system and Beth got a lot
of points. She said that she got the most
points for being in a boy’s room after hours.
But, feel lucky Brevard students. The af
ter hours curfew was 8 pm on weekdays
and 12 pm on weekends back then. Over
all, homecoming weekend was very suc-

in Brevard

Thirty years ago, women at
Brevard were forced to wear trench
coats to gym class. The college felt
that it was inappropriate for women to
expose themselves in any way. They
were also required
to complete cum
bersome “sign in”
and “sign out”
forms if leaving
campus. Even a
trip to the drug
store, which was
just a walk across
the street, de
manded such de
tails as whom they
were walking with
and what time they
left. Kristine
Moore was a Brevard College student
during this time and despite the strict
jurisdiction of the school, she was
able to carry on a successful rela
tionship with the man she is now
married to. Her husband, Taylor
Moore was a starting pitcher for the
baseball team. They met in the laun
dry room and Taylor insists that
they have been “going ‘round and
‘round ever since.”
Now the parents of three,
Kris and Taylor Moore are very
proud to have their two sons, Rob
ert and Jay Moore, attending
Brevard College. The couple still
considers Brevard as a very special
place where students can hopefully
explore the depths of their true in
terests. Both Kris and Taylor trans
ferred to large universities after
Brevard, but they have discovered
that the opportunities they received
here have been both meaningful and
worthwhile. They accredit much of
this to the outstanding faculty and
personal attention available to the
students.
The Moore’s, who cur
rently live in Virginia, enjoy each of
the many visits they make back to
the campus. Homecoming was no
exception. They were very im
pressed by the new Paul Porter Cen
ter as well as the achievements of
our numerous sports teams. See
ing familiar faces and the progress
of this institution reassured them
that BC is still a great place.
