Food For Thought:
Women’s Group Attracts Men
by Megan Clark
The Women’s Group at Brevard College has had an
exciting and fun filled semester. This group of about fourteen to
fifteen students met twice a month with Dee Dasburg to discuss
issues and topics that effect women in our society today and
discussions on the women in society’s past. One of the topics the
group focused on was who have had a voice in society and how
women are finding their place in society today? Another topic that
was discussed in the group was women in the classroom. This
discussion brought up conversations about women in academic
settings as opposed to men. The group started out as mainly just
women, but as time passed several men became interested in the
topics and decided to join the group.
During the month of October there were four special
meetings called Food for Thought. For everyone who showed up
to take part in the discussions, a very special dinner was served to
them by the cafeteria employees. The dinner was a “formal
change to the normal routine as the white cloths were pulled out for
the tables and the lights dimmed for effect. After the dinner, the
program began. The four topics discussed during the Food for
Thought dinners were sexual harassment, women in the workplace,
communication in relationships, and a special discussion on
Holidays. The holiday discussion was titled Holiday trimmings and
was just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday break. It brought up
many issues about what people liked and disliked about the
holidays.
If you are interested in the Women’s Group and the lively
discussions they cover, there will be a final meeting Thursday,
December 1 O'*. The meeting will be held in the Myers Dining Hall in
the Faculty Commons Room beginning at five o’clock p.m. If you
have any questions or comments, please see Dee Dasburg some
time before the meeting.
