FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12,1999 4 SPORTS BC Tornadoes: Whirling Into A Great Season Stacy Luckie Step outside, and take a big whiff; the spring season is near! And as spring rolls in, so too do the fastballs of the Tornadoes! After a great season last year, and a terrific world series showing, the Tornado baseball team is skyrock eting to the top. With a quality blend of returning players and a great freshman crop, this year’s team is reaching for the sky. The Torna does, who hold a pre-season ranking of #4, are lead by three returning blue chip players Jimmy Rice, Scott Auton, and ace pitcher Lance Zeigler. As Coach Payne foretells of the season,” We, the Tornadoes, are very optimistic of our chances for success!” Everyone knows to win a championship you need good team chemistry to go with the talent and experience. With great senior leadership this year’s team will have no problem with that. “ I look forward to seeing our team becoming closer, like a family, and finishing what we started last year,” states player Scott Gallo way. Chiming in about this year’s “mound pound” is last year’s “homerun king” Matt Brown; “This year we have more depth in our pitching staff. That’s really going to make us tougher.” The first ball of the regular season will be tossed on Feb. 6 at 1p.m., so grab the lawn chairs and the cooler, and head on down to Gil Cohen Field. Y’all come on down; you hear? Men’s BC Basketball What a Difference A Year Makes A Are You Ready for Some Softball? Stacy Luckie and Scott Auton As the spring season sets upon us, we have only one question to ask: Are you ready for some softball? That’s right, ladies’ softball is here at Brevard, and the Lady Tornadoes are poised and ready to go. First Year Boss Kim White, is looking forward to kick starting the BC program and watching it fly to the top. “The girls have been working very hard, and the team is really excited,” states Coach White. “I think that we are going to have a very success ful spring season.” With an effective coaching approach, the 24-year-old graduate of Notre Dame, has instilled a great work ethic and loads of confidence and enthusi asm in her players. “This year’s team is going to mark the begin ning of softball at Brevard College, and I’m just happy to be a part of that,” adds team member Alana Lanford. Not only do the ladies have talent, but they have a new field. Their first home game is Feb. 28 against Marville College, so come on down and check out the Lady Tornadoes. They truly are in a “league of their own.” Stacy Luckie A year removed from winning the Region X title, the BC Men’s Basketball team was not foreseeing any changes for the future, but the first semester of the 1998-99 season would be shocking. Last year, the Torna does fell only one game short of going to the nationals with an 18- 9 record overall and a 6-2 marking in the conference. They lost to Dekalb College in the Big 10 title game. After a rough start to the new season, the men’s basketball program is starting to get the ball in motion. With the early resigna tion of Coach Dudley Bradley over the Christmas break, the basketball team is getting a facelift in the second part of the season. With a new face and style, this season is not going to be a cakewalk. However, with new coach Tadd Conner and his unique and capable style, the team is feeling more confident every day. As sophomore guard Eryon Ford states, “ I feel good with Coach Conner taking over even though it is going to be tough learning a new system midway through the season.” Equally confident is Coach Conner who adds that he is very excited about the progress the team is making. We have a lot of talent and seem to be getting together well as a team.” With a 0-4 conference start in the second half, the Tornadoes are not out of trouble yet. Like heavyweight fighters in the ring, however, they are picking their spots, sticking, and moving. For this team, their time should come in the second round of the conference race. Although they are taking it one game at a time, the Region X tournament is where the real challenge will lie. Again confident, though. Coach Conner thinks “we will make a big run in the Region X tourney.” Guard Eryon Ford agrees: “Hopefijlly we will come out and play with a lot more energy this half of the season. Then we can defend our Region X title.” Different face, different style, it does not matter; when players feel good about themselves and their coach, anything can be accomplished. So, continue to support the new look of BC Men’s Basketball team. Good luck, players and Coach Tadd Conner, we’re behind you all the way.
