The Counselor’s Comer
Y Dee Dasburg
& Mikka Ward
Is it bad to be in a commit-
d relationship during college? Is
m the time I should be dating and
aving fun, while saving the com-
itment for later?
College is an opportunity to
(plore who you are and who you
e becoming. Relationships are
ily “bad” in college if the persons
ivolved feel they are unable to fully
sperience personal growth while in
the relationship. It is up to you to
decide how healthy your relationship
is with respect to allowing you to
continue your development as an
individual during your college
experience. Relationships with
commitment are about communica
tion and respect between the two
people involved. Be sure to use
communication with your partner to
explore the boundaries and expec
tations of the relationship to deter
mine if it is healthy for you in this
particular stage of your life.
It seems like everyone
knows what they're doing and
where they 're going with their lives
except me. How can I get on track
with finding out what I want to do
with my life?
Only you can determine
what it means to be “on track” with
your life. It is important not to let
others influence your ideas about
what it means to be successful in the
career world. If you feel you are not
taking the initiative about pursuing
a career, there are some options that
are available to you. Take interest
inventories that can indicate what
careers you might enjoy or do some
volunteer work in areas of personal
interest. Many people make several
different career changes in the
course of their lives as their inter
ests change, so recognize that you
don’t have to make a one-time
choice. In the meantime, don’t be
too be hard on yourself; give your
self permission to explore your op
tions and trust the process!
Benefits of Foreign Language Requirements Uncertain
Y Isaac Bradley
How much foreign language
lould be required? Today most
gh schools require or strongly
icommend at least two years of a
)reign language. Most colleges
quire another two semesters of a
foreign language in order to gradu
ate.
Is all of this foreign language
actually beneficial to the students?
The answer is yes and no. A foreign
language does expose students to
new fonns of thought as well as to
different cultures. However, most
students take a foreign language only
for graduation requirements and
then do not pursue the study any fur
ther. Students benefit from the ex
posure to a foreign language, but
they do not take enough of it to com
municate effectively.
Either there should be more
foreign language required so that
students gain the skills necessary to
communicate or there should be less
required giving the students the
choice to pursue the study or not.
