April 8, 2002 page 3 CLUB NEWS Circle K International: BC Chapter International -by LINDSAY SHIELDS, staff- Circle K originally began as an alternative to fraternities for young men attending col lege. Kiwanis, the sponsoring organization, was looking for a way to support young people d\iring college. In 1947, the first Circle K club was chartered at Carthage College in Illinois. In 1971, females were welcomed into Circle K. Now Circle K has grown into the largest organization for com munity service and leadership development at colleges and universities worldwide. Students involved in Circle K have the op portunity to participate in a number of schol arship and leadership programs. Each club organizes service projects as well as socials. Circle K is stiU sponsored by Kiwanis and is a part of the K-family, which includes Young Professionals, Key Club, Action clubs, K- kids, and Builder’s clubs. Each Circle K club is part of a division, headed by a Lieutenant Governor. The di vision is part of a District, headed by a Gov ernor and International Trustee. The Dis trict is part of International, headed by the President. Districts hold a convention ev ery year where students from Circle K clubs can socialize, learn more about the organi zation, compete for awards, and lobby for District office positions. At International Conventions, students from all over the world get together to celebrate the accom plishments they have made throughout the year. The Circle K member pledge is as follows: “I pledge to uphold the objects of Circle K International, to foster compassion and goodwill toward others through service and leadership, to develop my abilities and the abilities of all people, and to dedicate my self to the realization of mankind’s poten tial.” The Brevard College chapter of Circle K meets Sundays at 8pm in Coltrane Under ground. I 15 f -..I, •! • ' • •> .. • ' ' • I ' ■ for Christ -by AMELIA BROWN, guest writer- Purpose; Campus Crusade for Chnst exists to provide regular opportumties to study and discuss the Bible worship and pray, all in a group setting, which also provides opportunities for fellowship, encouragement and spiritual development among Christians. Student Association Members; Campus Crusade for Chnst has an open-door policy. There are no “members” in the sense of meeting requifements or being accepted into membership. Campus Crusade for Christ was formed by Christians who agreed in their belief that man’s only access to God is throvigh Jesus Christ and faith in His death as full payment for man’s sins, and His resurrection. While this is the founda tion for the Bible study, those holding other beliefs are welcome to attend. Officers; Campus Crusade for Christ does not have officers. However, a smaU group of participants with a strong commitment -by JULIE ROBBINS, guest writer- S. A. F E is a group of men and women who promote against and educate on topics such as violence against men and women, sexual assault, drug and alcohol abuse, and other safety issues common on campus. This group is always looking for more members. A current goal is to advocate more male member support and attendance. Their website will soon be up and running with easy access. Student Association -by MARIA FUENTES, staff writer- Purpose: They hope to promote multicultural aware ness through various excursions and social events. What they do and who they are: Because most international students don’t have cars, they go on various field trips. This association is opened to all students, whether international or American. Past Activities: International student dinners Fall break in Charleston Sightseeing trips into Asheville Community service projects with Manna Food Bank Meetings: This association only meets once a month on the last Friday of the month during lunch. The meetings are held upstairs in the Stamey Center. During the meetings they address issues that are of particular importance to international students. They also have dis cussions about how they are going to spend their budget with subsequent voting on a matter. These are Amelia Brown, Shelley Moore, We* Parker, Rachel Watkins, and Eric Stribling. Meetings; Campus Crusade for Christ meets every Monday night at 7;00 p. m. in the New Village Pavilion. These meetings begin with a time of praise and worship, followed by a Bible smdy (facilitated by a smdent leader) and time in smaU groups for discussion and prayer. Food and fellowship follow.
