Circle K International: BC Chapter International
-by LINDSAY SHIELDS, staff-
Circle K originally began as an alternative
to fraternities for young men attending col
lege. Kiwanis, the sponsoring organization,
was looking for a way to support young
people d\iring college. In 1947, the first
Circle K club was chartered at Carthage
College in Illinois. In 1971, females were
welcomed into Circle K. Now Circle K has
grown into the largest organization for com
munity service and leadership development
at colleges and universities worldwide.
Students involved in Circle K have the op
portunity to participate in a number of schol
arship and leadership programs. Each club
organizes service projects as well as socials.
Circle K is stiU sponsored by Kiwanis and is
a part of the K-family, which includes Young
Professionals, Key Club, Action clubs, K-
kids, and Builder’s clubs.
Each Circle K club is part of a division,
headed by a Lieutenant Governor. The di
vision is part of a District, headed by a Gov
ernor and International Trustee. The Dis
trict is part of International, headed by the
President. Districts hold a convention ev
ery year where students from Circle K clubs
can socialize, learn more about the organi
zation, compete for awards, and lobby for
District office positions. At International
Conventions, students from all over the
world get together to celebrate the accom
plishments they have made throughout the
year.
The Circle K member pledge is as follows:
“I pledge to uphold the objects of Circle K
International, to foster compassion and
goodwill toward others through service and
leadership, to develop my abilities and the
abilities of all people, and to dedicate my
self to the realization of mankind’s poten
tial.”
The Brevard College chapter of Circle K
meets Sundays at 8pm in Coltrane Under
ground. For more information, visit
www.circlek.org or www.caroUnask.org or

A current goal is to advocate more male
member support and attendance. Their
website will soon be up and running with
easy access.
