Tennis tops UVa-Wise

Brevard College evened
their Appalachian Athletic Con
ference (AAC) record at 2-2 on
Saturday Aprile 10 with a win
over UVa.-Wise.
Tied at 4-4 with the decid
ing match on the courts,
sophomore Cooper Rutledge
gave the Tornados the 5-4 win
over his opponent 6-1, 6-4.

their recent matches.
“We won this match today without our
number two player, (sophomore) Jeff’
Carbuhn, who’s out with an arm injury,” said
Worrell. “The rest of the guys stepped up
and played some good tennis to secure this
win today. I’m very proud of all the guys!”

managed to run a very respectable 10:57, only 13 seconds off his
fastest time this season.
The next event was the women’s 1500m run and consisted of
seniors Tara Barrier and Ashley Vaughn. Both runners were able to
run their fastest times of the season, with Tara running 5:20 for 12'^
place and Ashley running 5:41.
The men’s 1500m followed the
women’s, and freshman Blair Teal,
junior Kirk Bjorling, and senior Shane
Batson represented BC in this event.
Teal ran his fastest time of the year
and managed to get an S* place finish.
“I really wanted to break 4:10, but
I’m still happy I was able to get in the
top eight,” Teal said about his time of
4:13. Kirk ran 4:30 and Shane ran 4:40
respectively.
Next was the men’s 4 by 800m
relay. The relay team posted the
highest finish of the day for BC, with
a 6““ place overall. This was a great
accomplishment for the relay team since
3 of the 4 members had already raced once earlier in the day. The
relay team consisted of Kirk Bjorling (2:06), Blair Teal (2:06),
Harrison Vicini (2:09), and Jesse McEntire (2:08). The 4 by 8 team
had an official season best time of 8:30.
Senior Ryan Morris competed in the open 800m race and ran a
new personal record time of 2:39.
Last to compete for BC was Justin
Holstein in the men’s 5000m run. Justin
ran the race in a time of 18:16.
Overall, six of the eleven BC
athletes ran their fastest times of the
season.
On the women’s side, the meet
was won by Bellarmine University.
Cumberland College won the men’s
meet.
