Big Block Dodge : Manifold Destiny (Groosion Records 2002) **** m What a find this one was! The fellows of BBD put out an instrumental ‘lire screeacher” with this one. Can’t say for sure if these are all locals, but this album was recorded over in that town called Hendersonville, just down the road. With Jefr Hinkle on Bass, Billy Altman on guitar(s), and good ol’ boy Robin Tolleson bang’n the drums. Manifold Destiny, is a groover among groovers. The tracks titled, Tour de Pance. and Lyle's house of III. will be listed as favorites, but the whole thing is a sure bet for your next loafing session. Watch for a re-appear- ance of BBD in a music house near you. I give this one 4 shiners. Cowboy Junkies: Pale Sun, Crescent Moon (RCA Records 1993) **** I’m still, and always will be, in love with CJ’s vocalist, Margo Timmins. 1 saw this band way back when the second album was released. The Trinity Sessions. which was a late night soundtrack of sorts for many years. This one. Pale Sun, Crescent Moon, is also an essential for the mellow category in your collection. Ms. Timmin’s beautifully haunting voice can make even death and despair sound intoxicatingly sexy. The song. First Recollection, is an excellent example of this. The line, "the son must bear the burdens of the father, but it's the daugh ter who s left to clean up the mess ” as you can hear, has some personal meaning to her. And in the song. Pale Sun, she is singing about the ongoing friction between the white man and the Native American, with the line; "Old rusted pick up and a mad dog in the yard, purple paint peels but fails to reveal the bitterness that grows inside. ” To hear this in the context of the rest of the song, and the rest of the album for that matter, you quickly learn that the Canadian bom, singer/songwriter team, Margo and April 19, 20051 brother Michael, have a complex under standing of life and the lives of others. A classic in my book, this is an album to hear, study, and think about. Another 4 stellar, starlit, stars. The Essential, Billie Holiday (Verve Records, 1992) This is a compilation of 16 greatest songs by Billie Holiday, an American icon. What can be said about one of the all time great singers? Bobby Short puts it this way, “ They want to think of her as always half conked-out and singing the blues about ‘My man done left me! Sometimes she was singing about 'I ’m gonna leave my man! ’ It s nice to remember that she had a good time when she was singing. ” The sounds of older R & B women have paved the way for today’s singers. We will always remember Billie Holiday, as a gift to bluesy, soulful, passionate, music. Favorite track: Good morning Heartache, a Saturday morning kind of song. Stars...( many, many...)
