April 19, 2005 The Clarion Pa^ Art & Entertainment Faculty Spotlight: Biology lab manager Mary Elizabeth Beth Suttles L c • acirio thprp are toMs of lobs avail" What do you feel is the by Matt Rutherford Entertainment Editor Mary Elizabeth Suttles, the vibrant bi- lology lab manager, gave me the chance to interview her on April 14. She is originally from Huntersville, North Carolina and at tended Brevard College for three consecu tive years and spent one addition year at Northland College, Wisconsin, where she graduated with degrees in Outdoor and En vironmental Education with an emphasis in Natural History. What made you opt to work here at Brevard College? I was a student of Brevard College, and 1 knew from that moment that this school meant a lot to me. After I finished college at Northland, I came straight back to Brevard in 1993. In addition to teaching and going on to medical school, what types of jobs can biology majors pursue? There are countless types of research that biology majors can take part. Medical research aside, there are tons of jobs avail able in field and forest research. During your college profession who were some of your inspirations and idols? (Both academic and celebrity) My two biggest inspirations from Brevard were Bob Glesnor and Clyde Carter. My inspiration from Northland College was Clayton Russel, my environmental edu cation professor. As far as celebrities go...I like Drew Barrymore be cause she in unique and doesn’t really seem to care about the media, she’s her own person, and that’s what 1 aim to be. 1 also like Annie DiFranco. Her music is amazing. I’m always looking for someone to go with me to her concerts. Sin City is a perfect 10 /Icrt by Matt Rutherford Entertainment Editor DISCLAIMER: This movie is not for those of you who have weak stomachs, dislike foul language, and or have issues with social deviants. Sin City is destined to become one our generation’s biggest t^ult classics much like last years duo Kill Bill 1 and 2. Robert Rodriguez has taken Frank Miller’s comic book series “Sin and adapted it into a mesh of odd yet intriguing color, accompanied with a generous number of celebrities. This was definitely a winning combo. In the depths of Sin City, a dark and ■^thless place where only the corrupt survive. Prostitutes and fraudulent cops are in charge of this hellish metropolis, "'I'ich is probably why actors and actresses were so apt to get a role. The cast includes Clive Owen, Benicio Del Toro, Rosario Dawson, Josh Hartnett, Mickey Rourke, Nick Stahl, Bruce Willis, Elijah Wood, Jessica Alba, Michael Madsen, and Brittany Murphy. Even Quentin Tarantino takes part in the film by being introduced as the special guest director. The plot of Sin City really is not that of a normal movie. It’s more of a collection of stories that are narrated by whomever the story is centered on. However, none of these stories are done in any type of order, but the characters noticeably overlap into each other’s stories with small cameo performances. The characters all seem to have lost their sense of rationality. A character in this movie never changes their mind What do you feel is the weakest link of Brevard College? 1 feel the weakest link in the separation of Staff, Administration, and Faculty. You need everyone working together, not as separate unit. We need to come together as a college family and community. What do you enjoy most about teaching here at Brevard? The small class sizes are great. It makes it much easier to get to know my students. Not to mention the location. For biology I think its great that we have such a great en vironment to work with, since Pisgah Forest is so close by. Lots of students are frus trated with the BCE programs on campus. To what do you attribute the student apa thy? 1 think there is a lot of resentment be- see Suttles, page about anything; an all or nothing attitude. These characters are catego rized under two sided natures. Whether it’s the beautiful yet deadly dame or the corrupt priest who runs the state from the shadows, each character either has a conscience or nothing at all. I thought this movie was absolutely amazing. The use of black and white as a palette to support the splashes of random color was one best ideas to portray a comic book. The cast^, while larger than I expected, was one of the best groups of actors I’ve seen perform on the big screen in a long time. As I said before this Sin City is a great movie if you can handle the immense amounts of violence and language. Sin City is a perfect 10.
