Welcome to Brevard... now what?
by Adam Beeson
Managing Editor
Let’s face it freshmen, walks to and
from the cafeteria can be exciting for only
so long. And believe me, sitting in your
room looking at the Facebook all night isn’t
all its cracked up to be either So here’s a
short list of things to do around the area
that might get you off campus, or at least
out of your room for that matter
While Brevard may not be the typical
bar hopping, fraternity party, football crazy
college town of America, there is still plenty
to do in the area. Of course, being in
Brevard means you are surrounded by the
never-ending and always fascinating
Pisgah National Forest. In the forest you
will find an infinite number of hiking, run
ning, and biking trails, campsites, rivers,
rope swings, cliffs, and boulders. And as
you all should know from the backbreak
ing orientation that you dreadfully suffered
through the first week of school,
Transylvania County is engulfed with over
250 waterfalls for your viewing, and in
many cases jumping, pleasure.
If playing in the woods isn’t your
thing, try exploring the big city of Asheville,
only 33 miles from campus. There you will
find an eclectic mix of boutiques. From
funky to hippy to punk, all the shopping
you need can be found in Asheville. And ■
yes, for all you mall rats worried about the
latest name brand trends, there is the
Asheville Mall locatcd just outside the
downtown area. While you’re there, check
out some of Asheville’s delicious cuisine.
Some places to keep in mind are The Mel
low Mushroom, Jack of the Wood, The
Laughing Seed, and Barley’s.
But now we’ll return home. After all,
with gas prices topping over three dollars
a gallon, it might be a good idea to walk to
some popular eats closer to campus. Check
out some of these great restaurants
Brevard has to offer:
Cielito Lindo has been the traditional
Mexican food hangout for the past few
years, but El Ranchero has been slowly
crawling ahead with their infamous Thurs
day night specials. If you’re not into Mexi
can, try Dugan’s Pub, located on Main
Street, and providing everything from Insh
favorites like fish and chips to good old
fashion American hamburgers. Venturing
more into the town, you can find student
favorites like Casey Jones, The Sunrise
Cafe, Pescado’s Burritos, and Big Mike’s.
Jordan Street Cafe and Jason’s on Main
Street provide not only good meals but
some of the best local musicians Western
North Carolina has to offer
After all this food, you may need some
exercise. Brevard Rock Gym opened just
over a year ago and is one of the finest,
and closest, indoor climbing gyms around.
Fully staffed with experienced climbers, the
gym is suitable for any student itching to
begin this popular sport. For a much easier
workout, travel over to Pisgah Lanes and
bowl the night away. Keep an eye out for
college night at the lanes, sure to always
lead to a good time.
Finally, if you’re sick of grinding
through the campus all afternoon, grab
your board and head over to Zero Gravity
Skatepark. The 12,000 square foot indoor
park offers a spine mini-ramp, fun boxes, a
mini three-quarter bowl, bank ramps, launch
boxes, a pyramid, ledges and roll-ins.
Okay, so we’ve run through a short
list of popular spots in the area. I hope you
were taking notes. If it still didn’t convince
you that, yes there are things to do in this
retirement community ridden town, or if you
just got sick of doing the things listed
above, then you can never go wrong with
this one simple solution: Head to Ingles.
Grab a six pack. And call it a night.

Advice for BC freshmen include
gems Uke ‘Be a gentleman, or a lady’
Editor's Nnie- WhUo ^
Editor's Note: While digging
through the Clarion archives, we came
across a bit of advice from the first ever
issue of The Clarion—dated September
25, 1935. Written during the Great
Depression and before Adolf Hitler was
a household name, these "Hints for
Freshmen" should provide some
insight into life here at the college.
When you enter Brevard College you
are considered a gentlemen, or a lady. You
can do as you like about your work; no
body will make you do it. Be honest with
yourself and always keep in mind the fact
that you are here because of a great life
purpose.
You are a freshman in college not a
senior in high school. You are not judged
by what you say about your “prep school”
but by what you do here.
All students should be in the cheer
ing section at the athletic contests in order
to give the team proper support.
Every member of the student body
should speak to the men of the visiting
teams while they are on the campus and do
all in their power to make them feel at home
while here.
Don’t think that profanity, cigarettes,
and drinking “booze” make a true college
man. ^
Don’t be afraid to say “NO” and stick
to It. TTiere will always be company with
you at Brevard College.
_Don’t cut out athletics. Get into some
form of them and benefit yourself.
Be a mixer and a credit to the college.
You will never find time for anything-
if you want time you must make it.
Be a gentleman or a lady at the table
as well as elsewhere.
Be willing to take advice from fac
ulty and upper classmen alike.
Don’t hurry in the selection of your
intimate companions. Take time to select
the right companions, because it means
much to establish yourself with the right
company.
To be a success as a student it is
necessary to “shine” in the classroom as
in the “bull session.”
