I’ll admit; I didn’t know where to start this review so I erred on the side of cau tion. So if you party too much or like to have fun more than you should you might want to leave this cd alone. Sack is a band formed from remnants of the breakup of the Lillingtons, one of the best pop punk bands formed in the 90’s, and current members of Teenage Bottlerocket, inarguably the best pop punk band around in the last 20 years. Sack lasted just long enough to record the 13 song, 25 minute cd titled “Get Wrecked,” a cd that I can not get enough of. The thing about Sack is that even though they had members from two of the best pop punk bands in this decade and the last, they’re not pop punk. They call themselves Street Rock, but even that doesn’t do justice to the music. This is the music that makes you want to grow a mullet, buy a rusty camero and start cooking meth. There’s a very obvious reason they started the cd with a song called “One Helluva Party” with lyrics like "Give me one reason not to do the kegstand / drink ing games are for stupid f...ing college ass " If you listen to any sort of rock ‘n’ roll or punk or any- thmg loud that has guitars in it, then this is your ulti mate party cd. The only problem with that is this cd leads to broken tv’s, ugly kids passed out on your couch and some thing big on fire in the backyard. Standout songs are “King Of the Beach”, and “The Bom Loser” that is amaz ingly hilarious with lyrics such as “they think I’m a piece of s.../ and they think that I should care/ but 1 don’t give a f... cause I’m the bom loser” and “17 will get you 20 / yeah I know because I’ve done my share”. My favorite song from this CD is un doubtedly Rad Biker, a song that's about about a skinny white guy on a dirt bike. Cody, the lead singer, yells “With his t- W recked shirt off 1 can see his f...ing ribcage / who’s poppin wheelies with the greatest of ease / he’s spinning doughnuts like a Texas tor nado / hey look at me I’m in the eye of the storm”. Anyone listening knows this isn’t for your intellect. As much as I enjoy liv ing in the world of academia, sometimes I have to turn off those analytical parts of my brain, pound a few beers and turn a CD like this one all the way up to II. Somewhere around the 10th straight-through listen ing to this CD, 1 realized something worth noting. As cluttered as music is with bands trying to say something important or trying to per fectly describe a feeling, every once in a while a band comes along that makes it fun to listen to music again. No heartache, no politics, just plain guitar driven, straight forward ass kicking. Here’s to rock ‘n’ roll and here’s to the most fun CD I’ve heard in years. This is the kind of music that made me want to learn how to play the guitar, and that’s as much as I can say for it. Faculty Spotlight: Shirley Arnold directs new Academic Enrichrnent Center I 1 think Ouest was successful, but by Matt Rutherford Arts & Life Editor Shirley Arnold, our Director of the new Academic Enrichment Center, was bom in Kingsport, Tennessee. She received her bachelors in religious education at Cente nary College of Louisiana, and her masters in education at the University of Phoenix. Shirley currently resides in Etowah, North Carolina. What brought you to Brevard College? What originally brought me to the area was to be closer to my family in Tennes see. I had worked in admissions at a previ ous college, and a position in academic counseling came open. I had enjoyed work ing with students before, so 1 accepted. Brevard College offered me a chance to work with students, through counseling. So, can you tell me a little about your po sition here at Brevard? I oversee all of the academic support programs such as: tutoring, academic coun seling, and eventually to help oversee both the writing center as well as the math lab. The goal of the new Academic Enrichment Center (AEC) will be to help all students. Whether they have a learning disability, are in honors, FYF, or are just looking to boost their grade from a C to an A, we are here to provide the help that’s needed. How long have you worked here? Right at four years. fVho are your role models? Both my parents. Even though they had no college education, they instilled the belief that all people are equal and pro vided me with the support and balance I needed in life. How do you feel about the Quest program now that it has been through the trial run? Do you feel it will be any more successful in the future? I think Quest was successful, but also provided growing pains for both students and faculty. We know what works and what doesn’t. These courses are meant to make students think critically, and the de veloping of this skill is detrimental to col lege I'f®- What other projects are you currently working on? You mentioned the new AEC. When wilt it open? Really, my focus is making sure the AEC is open and working on time. And of course making sure students are on the right track. Part of this is getting a tutoring program up and running. Our goal is to open by fall break, but if not, we will be open by next semester. Finally, just out of curiosity, what's in your car CD/tape player? James Taylor’s Greatest Hits.
