Sports The Clarion \ September 23,2005 It’s time for a new mascot by Adam Beeson Managing Editor Let’s talk mascots. 1 mean, honestly, can we even say it anymore without that silly little grin crossing our faces, or at least a slight curl of the lip for that matter? Try it with me now; Tornadoes. It’s been the joke ever since 1 can re member We’ve all seen it. A group of stu dents are gathered alongside King’s Creek during an athletic event and decide to give it the old tornado whirl: arms straight out, perpendicular to the body, spinning in vi cious circles while their buddies are doubled over with laughter, sarcastically yelling, “Go Tornadoes!” Now I’m not saying it’s always been this way. I’m sure there was a time when the students on this campus looked upon their mascot with respect. Of course, this was probably around the same time that New York still had the Knickerbockers, Atlanta still had the Crackers, and Chi cago still had the Staleys. Yes, before the Bears there was the Staleys. Bottom line is, times change. And with a change in time comes a change in popular culture. Don’t get me wrong, as intimidating as a natural disaster may be. New Orleans will never go from the Hor nets to the Katrinas. It just doesn’t have the same effect. Fact: Between the years 1950 and 1995 Transylvania County had a total of three tornadoes. Three. Maybe it’s just me, but something doesn’t seem right here. Solution: Let’s go for something of a somewhat scary abundance in Transylvania County: White Squirrels! Now you may laugh, but hear me out. If we really do take pride in ourselves as being “different,” (not just a number, unique majors, liberal arts, you've heard it all before) then why not follow in the footsteps of some of our brave collegiate counterparts like the Minnesota Golden Gophers or the Coastal Carolina Chanti cleers? These schools not only take pride in their uniqueness but they exert their town’s rich history in those titles as well. The Fighting White Squirrels. Hell, if I ever stumbled upon an unusually strap ping, fierce eyed, no nonsense white squirrel sporting red boxing gloves and a bad attitude, I might be a little intimidated. But that’s just me. Where else in the world can one find a white, not albino, but white, squirrel than right here in Brevard, North Carolina? It’s because of this individuality that we should make every effort to support these ftiry little creatures we’ve all come to call friends. Intimidation? Yes. Individuality? Yes. Differentiation? Yes! Come support Brevard College Ath letics. Come support your men’s and women’s Fighting White Squirrels.
