New mascot, sports writers
needed on BC campus
Make sure you look where you’re walk
ing on campus, you might injure your
spine. Jing Zhoa was walking near Dun
ham Music Center when she fell over 5 feet
and ended up in the Missions Hospital
Spine Center in Asheville. While she is
not paralyzed, this incident highlights the
lack of certain safety precautions on cam
pus. Since the incident a lamp has been
installed so that the gap is easier to see.
Surely these sorts of precautions should
be in place before anyone is injured.
It s been around for cjuite a few years,
but the college’s mascot, a tornado, is fi
nally being scrutinized. A group of stu
dents in Dr. Jordan’s Political Economy and
Social Thought class formed a committee
to judge students’ views on the current
mascot and reconsider the possibility of
having it changed. This spawned from
Adam Beeson’s column in the September
23 issue of TTie Clarion. Hopefully the in
adequate use of a tornado for our mascot
will be changed sometime soon. We need
a unique and fitting mascot here at Brevard
College; one that will represent our col
lege. It’s the opinion of the editorial board
that the most fitting choice would be the
“Brevard College Fighting White Squir
rels.”
In the last issue of The Clarion we
touched on the problem of apathy on cam
pus, and while that is still an issue, there is
a more specific problem facing The Clarion.

No one seems to want to write sports ar
ticles, or even photograph sports events
on campus. Our volleyball team is in sec
ond place in the Appalachian Athletic Con
ference, ranked third in the region and BC
is hosting the conference tournament soon,
meanwhile the golf team is doing very well.
Yet, we have no one covering these
events. Surely there are some sports fans
out there that would like to write an article
or two about campus teams.
As far as the nation at large, it’s been
a bad week for America. Vice President
Cheney’s top aide, Lewis “Scooter” Libby
was indicted on charges of perjury, lying
to federal investigators, and obstruction
of justice in the ongoing investigation into
the outing of undercover CIA operative
Valerie Plame. Bush’s nominee for Supreme
Court justice, Harriet Miers, withdrew her
nomination in fear that it was causing harm
to the White House, and Bush has nomi
nated Samuel Alito, a right wing judge
whose on mother has admitted he is against
abortion. Perhaps when the Republicans
speak of “activist judges” they’re a little
confused.
All of this highlights an executive
branch and Senate majority that doesn't
care for the rights of this country's citi
zens. Perhaps NC Democratic party chair
man Jerry Meek was right when he said
“Patriotism to a Republican is a love for
country.” It's becoming more obvious that
to Republicans, and in general those in
power, patriotism is love for power and
those that hold it.
