by Zach Browning
Staff Writer
Recently, several Brevard
College athletes have been
awarded for academic achieve
ment. Among them were eight
members of the men’s and
women’s cross country teams.
Senior Kirk Bjorling, senior
Danielle Deines-Raduly, junior
Sara Harris, senior Emily Hulse,
sophomore Kelly Hurst, junior
Andrew King, sophomore Jesse
McEntire, and sophomore Lind
say Sherrill all received Appala
chian Athletic Conference
(AAC) academic honors.
The athletic programs at
Brevard College hold their ath
letes to high standards in their
academic endeavors as well as
their athletic ability, according to
Cross Country coach Thomas
Cason. “We set high academic
standards on our team to ensure
that each runner is a student
first. We believe that academic
success will breed success on
the cross country course, and
these athletes mold this belief
into fact,” Cason said.
To be considered for the
AAC All Academic honors, stu
dent athletes must maintain a
cumulative G.P.A of 3.25 on a
scale of 4.00. Students are also
required to have reached sopho
more standing at his/her respec
tive institution, and be ranked in
the top seven on the team, or run
a sub 23:00 in the 5k (women) or
a sub 30:00 in the 8k (men). In
addition to these requirements
the student must have com
peted in at least 50 percent of
the competitions for that sea
son.
“1 am proud of these ath
letes success in the classroom.”
Coach Cason said.
Five members of the
Women’s soccer team were re
cently named 2005 Daktronics-
National Association of Inter
collegiate Athletes (NAIA)
women’s soccer Academic All-
American Athletes. This honor
carries much of the same require
ments as ACC award; students
must maintain a cumulative
GP.A. of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale and
be in junior standing both aca
demically and athletically.
Those making the list in
clude junior April Banks, senior
Ashley Curtis, junior Jessica
Risher, and senior Johanna
Tornquist.
There were more than 320
players listed as All-American
Scholar Athletes, 15 of which
came from the AAC, with
Brevard College leading the way.
Junior Adam Beeson of the
BC men’s soccer team w'as also
awarded AAC All-Academic and
NAIA Academic All-American
honors.
“It’s nice to receive the rec
ognition after putting in so much
academically for three years. It
can be tough to balance soccer
and school,” Beeson said.

country runner
by Zack Harding
Staff Writer
Senior Emily Hulse finished
in 99“' place at the 7th Region
National Association of Inter
collegiate Athletics (NAIA).
This is a milestone in Hulse’s
cross country career; she has
placed just one spot short of
qualifying in earlier years.
“It was important to prove
to myself that I could make it.”
Hulse said. She credits the sup
port of her teammates and coach
Cason. “1 knew this was my last
chance to ever make [cross
country] nationals being it is my
senior year.”
Hulse worked strenuously
to perform at her utmost best. “This is the reason I made it to
nationals. This is why I placed where I did.” Hulse wanted to thank
the team saying, “they helped me in more ways than training.”
Hulse has the distinction of being the first Brevard College
student to both qualify and finish a NAIA race in the top 100 since
1999. She has since been the fourth woman in the last three years to
go to nationals.
