BC hires new football coaches, sets ’06 schedule
by Zach Browning
Staff Writer
Head football coach Bobby
Poss has been busy as of late
assembling his coaching staff,
and with less than seven months
until the team is scheduled to hit
the field, the team is starting to
come together.
“We are pushed to the max,
trying to accomplish in eight
months a task that would nor-
1
mally take eighteen.” Poss said.
Coach Poss has added three new
coaches to the team over the past
few months.
Mike Houston, who previ
ously coached at T.C. Roberson
High School in Asheville, will be
the associate head coach and
defensive coordinator. Houston
attained notability while serving
as the Rams coach. He led the
team to their best year in 2004
when they completed a 13-1 track
record and won their first Moun
tain Atlantic Conference Cham
pionship. Houston was awarded
the North Carolina Shrine Bowl
Assistant Coaches award in
2005 and was twice given the
Hendersonville Times-News
Area Coach of the Year award.
Houston is a graduate of Mars
Hill College where he earned a
bachelors degree in biology. He
lettered three years in football
while at Mars Hill and received
several awards and recognitions
for outstanding performance on
the field.
Houston’s assistant defen
sive coordinator will be Roy
Tesh, a former strength and con
ditioning coach from Greens
boro College. Tesh graduated
from Greens
boro College in
2004 with a
bachelor’s de
gree in sport
and exercise
science. Tesh
played tackle
and center
while in school
and was a four
time Dixie Inter
collegiate Ath
letic Confer
ence All-Con
ference selec
tion. Tesh’s
credentials in
clude playing
professionally
for the Carolina
Ghostriders, a
part of the
American In
door Football
League.
The offensive line will be
coached by Anthony Scott, who
held the same position while
coaching at East Forsyth high
school. Scott earned his bach
elors degree in broadcasting
from Georgia Southern Univer
sity where he played football.
Scott was part of the team that
won four Sothern Conference
Championships and two Na
tional Collegiate Association I-
AA championships. Scott also
coached Track and field as well
as serving as the academic ad
visor for the football team while
at East Forsyth.
Coach Poss took over the
fledgling team in January and
has been busy with the tasks of
building a team from the ground
up. He has been ordering equip
ment as well as talking to the
flood of prospects drawn to the
college by the football team.
With the help of his assistants,
Poss has been workmg diligently
to build a team roster. There
have been several commitments,
but before announcing any con
tracts, Poss wants to secure the
student a scholarship.
The season is scheduled to
start on Aug. 26 when the Tor
nadoes will face off in a home
game against the University of
Virginia-Wise.
“1 am looking forward to
Aug. 26 when we take the field
against UVA-Wise,” Athletic di
rector Tom Collins said. There
will be eight games in the sea
son, including South Atlantic
Conference teams from Mars
Hill, Newberry and Tusculum.
These schools will present a
challenge to the newly formed
program at Brevard College.
Collins said, “I am pleased
we have been able to build a
compact schedule against
schools in our geographic re
gion. The South Atlantic confer
ence Schools pose a real test for
our first year program.”
