April 14,2006 — The Clarion Sports Page 11 BC track and field show improvement at Emory Invitational by Emily Hulse Special to The Clarion Six female and four male run ners competed at the Emory In vitational in Atlanta, Georgia on March 31 and April 1. Despite humid, hot condi tions, several athletes ran per sonal bests during this meet. Starting off the running events Friday evening were se nior Emily Hulse and sophomore Jesse McEntire. These two ath letes competed in the 3000m steeplechase. Hulse jumped her way to a 5* place finish with a time of 12:08. This performance was recognized as a new women’s school record. Jesse McEntire ran/hurdled a strong race, finishing in 12‘*’ place with a time of 10:24. Quartrail Tucker also competed in the high jump Friday evening. This was only his second time ever competing in this event. Saturday, four athletes started off the morning with one of the longest races on the track, the 5k. This 3.1 mile race circles around the track a long and hard 12.5 times. On the women’s side, junior Sara Harris showed strong improvement with a best ever time of 21:46. Freshman Alycia Andrade battled the heat and also worked her way to a per sonal besi time of 22:06. Junior Andrew King and Freshman Tim Panneri competed on the men’s side in this race. King’s time was 18:09 and Panneri’s-18:17. Four athletes competed In the 1500 meter run at noon on Saturday. On the men’s side, Jesse McEntire ran a time of 4:23. rhis was senior Matt Owen’s first event of the season, running a time of 4:37. Ilulse and fresh man Tiffany Gnann also com peted in this event running times of 5: Hand 6:17 respectively. Both these times managed to rank in these girls personal best times. Freshmen Nikki Rivera and Jenna Myers also ran personal bests in the painfully grueling 800 meter run. Rivera competed her way to a strong finish with a time of 2:44. Myers raced her way to a time of 2:51. BasebaU loses thriller at Southern Wesleyan BC baseball looked to rebound on April 5 against Southern Wesleyan University, following two losses at Mars Hill the day before. The Tornados sent Freshman Spencer Linn to the mound for his first collegiate start. Linn has seen nearly every inning this season from third base and, because of this, has only thrown in short relief situations. Linn cruised through the first 4 innings, allowing only I hit. Zach Tolbert belted his first homerun of the season in his first at bat, giving the Tornados a 1-0 lead. How ever, in the fifth, Linn began to tire a bit, and SWU scored 4 times. In the sixth, SWU added 3 more, making the game seem like a blowout at 7-1. But the Tornados would not go quietly, answering with 7 allowed for the winning run to come across the plate, finally ending a wild one. Final score, SWU 11, Brevard 10. runs of their own in the top of the 7"’ inning, to take a dramatic 8-7 lead. Junior Brooks Owenby gave up a run in the bottom of the 7’\ tying the score once again at 8. In the top half of the S'*" in ning, BC scratched twice again, highlighted by Nathan Free’s leadoff triple. However, like the inning before, BC could not hold off the Warrior bats, as they came right back in the bottom half to tie the score at 10.
